It has been two hours since she lied down and still awake now 😂. She is supposed to go to school tomorrow. This just drives me mad.

I have 5 kids, 4 are diagnosed with ASD. None of them sleep well, it's a constant fun party here until around 11.30/12.00 every night when all of a sudden there will be complete silence and 4 exhausted little people will just fall asleep. That moment each night, as you can imagine, is bliss Grin

CalamityJaney · 10/01/2022 00:17

6 year old son also the same. It takes him hours to fall asleep and then struggles to get up the next day. Bedtime routine all goes well, he just can’t close his eyes and go to sleep. Don’t get me started on Feliz Navidad 😂

CalamityJaney · 10/01/2022 00:18

I’ve been looking at weighted blankets for children and wondering if that might help.

flowersinherhairinjune · 10/01/2022 00:19

Could she sit and read a book for half an hour until she gets sleepy? When my 8 year old can't sleep I say she can read a book or she just has to lie there and try and sleep. I try not to engage too much or else she would start manipulating it for her own enjoyment every night.

Maybe that's too early for her? My 8 year olds lights out is 9.30 pm and most of her friends at school are the same. She's just turned 8 in October.

My 11 year old goes to bed at 8.30...

Who is that in response to?
PlanktonsComputerWife · 10/01/2022 00:27

You, my dear. Every kid is different and you probably can't generalise by age group to such an extent. My Y6 is snoring like a wildebeest by 9.30pm.

CheshireChat · 10/01/2022 00:27

My 7yo is still awake and seeing he fell asleep at school last week, I'm really not impressed.

He's in some pain for various reasons, but he needs to sleep.

It was just a suggestion because as you say, all children are different and her dd might find it a struggle to get to sleep as it may be too early for her. Calm down 'my dear'.
GTAlogic · 10/01/2022 00:32

My dc 1, aged 10, has lights out at 10p.m. but is often still awake at midnight. He has adhd though and struggles to shut his brain off. We just leave him to it because even though he sings and talks to himself and sneakily reads he doesn't cause any problems or make a lot of noise and he stays in his room.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 10/01/2022 00:35

I'm never not calm, thank you.Smile

Hope your DS can get some relief from his pain and get to sleep, @CheshireChat.

Or from a different background to you. However it may be, I don't seek to give offence and I apologise for distressing you.

BayesianBlues · 10/01/2022 01:56

Surely a lot depends on when they need to get up!
Where we live, school starts ridiculously early and my 7 yo needs to be up before 6.
Most kids this kind of age will need 9-12 hours of sleep (which is a huge range!). My kid's lights out is 7.30-8, meaning (hopefully) about 10 hours of sleep). Not sure it's always enough but it also takes a while to fall asleep so we put on an audio book or music so at least they'll lie there quietly and rest even if not fast asleep.
You can try to tweak bedtime later and see how it goes, how tired they are in the morning and how easy it is for them to get up. it'll give you an idea if they're getting enough sleep.
