Morrisons - to think this might backfire?

Morrisons are planning to remove the 'use by' date on their milk to prevent food waste, the idea being that people sniff it before they use it instead. I think reducing food waste is brilliant but ... AIBU to think that quite a lot of people will chuck milk out even sooner without 'use by' guidance as they won't know if it's still ok to use. And if, as the article suggests, milk is often fine for a few days after the use by date, why don't they just extend the use by date instead then Confused? I also think it will lead some people to chuck it on the 'best before' date if that's the only date on the label, thus wasting even more. I don't personally think I would trust a sniff test, I wouldn't feel confident about it. I think this new policy might lead to more waste not less, and would put me off buying it. Or is it just me?

I'm not sure that the dominant Covid strain causes loss of smell or taste any more.

It's a wonder that the human race survived prior to supermarket labelling isn't it?

Perhaps you might like to join me on my campaign to Clarks Shoes. They really ought to stitch a warning label onto shoelaces, in case people forget to tie them up. I wrote to my MP, but he said something about Darwin's Law ...?

@AnaBananas

What if it has already gone off in the supermarket. Can't really sniff it in store.
No change to how things are at the moment. If it has gone off before you opened it, and before it's best before dates then I'm sure they will give you a refund. Just as they would previously have, but with a use by date instead.

I want a use by/ best before date when I am buying the milk to know that I am not picking up the last of the 3 day old cartons not put out in time. Once it gets home it helps to have the date to pull the old cartons first so if they were going to do that I would not be buying milk from them.

Totally agree. I often don’t buy items from Morrisons because they don’t have a good enough use by date on them so I want to see what it is before I buy. Once I get it home and we get to the use by date I do the sniff test.

My milk in the fridge is dated 5th Jan. there are no floating bits in my tea so I will continue to use it,

Coulddowithanap · 11/01/2022 14:01

Why wouldn't you use the 'sniff test'?

We've had milk that has gone off before the date but didn't continue using it because the date said it was OK. (actually I think I most likely noticed it when it separated when I put it in my tea!)

I buy my milk in a glass bottle from a machine across the road, no use by on that so definitely relying on sniff testing! They also do lovely milkshake Grin

It will still have a date. All that is happening is that the words "Use by" on the packaging will now say "Best Before".
