To say no Morrisons now is not a good time to introduce a sniff test

BBC News reporting today that Morrisons is removing use by dates from its milk in favour of best before and encouraging consumers to take a sniff test when deciding whether to use the milk or not.

Tremendous timing Morrisons since I’ve not been able to smell more than 20% of anything since Covid in August. Left on gas? Nope. Chopping onions? Not a whiff. Gone off milk. Not a hope in hell.

Me and half the country?

YABU, a tiny sip of hone off milk won’t kill you if you can’t do the sniff test.

@sst1234

Do people really poor good milk down the drain just because it past use before date. That’s stupid. Morrisons are just advocating for common sense.
So little common sense nowadays sadly.

Not only do many people pour perfectly good milk down the drain, they also throw perfectly good bread, meat, eggs etc away just because they have reached a magic date stamped on them.

I literally never look at dates. I buy my eggs from local people whose chickens are running around their gardens so they don't have a date on them anyway.

I am perfectly capable of looking at food, smelling it and maybe tasting it to know whether it is ok to eat or not.

I regularly eat yoghurts a month or more out of date. I cut mould of cheese and eat that. I have never ever looked at the date on cheese.

People need to stop being stupid and needing to be nannied.

Having a very poor sense of smell, I was annoyed seeing this headline. Having read the whole article, I’m now incensed at one more example of our manipulative, verging on lying Press which will spin anything to create outrage and division. Yes, they are getting rid of use by, but will still be displaying a best before date which is perfectly adequate as a guide for shoppers. A headline which gave that information should not have been beyond them. Something like ….. Morrisons revamps labelling to discourage food waste …… would have been much more honest.

@greenlynx

I personally won’t buy milk from Morrison’s any more as I don’t like this approach. I think it’s too complicated for people with learning disabilities and some elderly people. There are better ways to cut the waste and the timing of their decision is really stupid considering how Covid affects sense of smell.
I am 67 so probably regarded as elderly and I think it's great. I don't need to be told when food is ok to eat and when it should be thrown away.

Foods never used to have dates on and people coped fine.

Something has to be done about the horrendous and disgraceful food waste in this country

The cartons for the milk we get changed a while ago. It says a best before date, but also "Often good for longer". For the people who pour perfectly good milk away based on a number on the carton, of which there are many and most of them can smell perfectly well.

If you can't smell, go by the number, but it's just to encourage those who can smell to think a bit.

Cookerhood, unless it's not printed or marked on this week's milk but I've never seen a date before either.

Our milk is a smaller local company rather than a big one like milk and more.
