To switch alcohol addiction to sparking water addiction?

I have an addictive personality and unfortunately one of my big addictions was alcohol. I’ve finally managed to ditch it but now I’m obsessed with carbonated water. I’m drinking gallons of the stuff, I’ve just drank a 1.5L bottle in the past hour and now I’m craving more.
I’m worried it’s bad for me?! Is it? Is it just water or have I switched one unhealthy habit for another?

You can get false teeth, you can't get a false liver.
Been off the booze for years, will never go back to it, you really don't realise when drinking the knock on effect it has in your everyday life.

The kidneys cannot process excess water eithier. Whilst I appauld what she is doing it isn't without dangers too.

Pretty much everything is bad for your teeth apart from water. I’d crack on. I like fizzy water too.

Tal45 · 09/01/2022 17:08

I have read previously that carbonated drinks could affect calcium levels leading to problems with bone density, but the research findings seem to be a bit mixed. The term addictive personality is also controversial though so who knows!! Fizzy water is certainly a million times better for you than alcohol that's for sure!

To much can cause kidney stones and gout.I used to live in Italy where they drink lots of carbonated water and both those conditions were rife.My GP in Milan told me about this.

@WakeUpLockie

Drink it through a straw if you’re worried. I’ve had a sparkling water addiction for years and my teeth are perfect :)
Samesies. Always use a straw

Hi OP, I’m a dentist, I say carry on with your sparkling water which is HUGELY better for you and your teeth than alcoholic drinks .
I know posters who suggest adding cordial mean well, but that could spell disaster for your teeth in these quantities so stick with what you are doing and congratulations

TheAverageUser · 09/01/2022 17:16

Well done on stopping drinking, I doubt there's anything better you could do for you health. Don't worry about sparkling water for now, whatever works.

Get a soda stream! Life changing...

I find a lot of it with not much food gives me an upset gassy stomach.

I get through at least 2 litres a day of the stuff and my teeth are fine as far as I know although I wonder if the sodium mentioned is in bottled stuff not soda stream?

Momicrone · 09/01/2022 17:35

I love sparkling water but am quite fussy about which one so not sure a soda stream is gonna cut it

Ericaequites · 09/01/2022 18:24

Well done! Think about the favor you are doing your liver! A Sodastream works great, and cuts out lugging bottles home and disposing of same.

JanisMoplin · 09/01/2022 18:28

I didn't know it was dangerous to drink too much water 😟

Blossom64265 · 09/01/2022 18:29

Do you have the flavored versions there? Where I livers there is an explosion of brands with assorted fruit flavors of sparkling waters. Those are all yummy. The best though is a brand that puts just a tiny bit of real juice in each serving. You end up with some actually calories, but it’s so trivial you could drink gallons of the stuff and it wouldn’t amount to anything.

TLDR: nope, enjoy your sparkling water

AliceAbsolum · 09/01/2022 18:52

It's not bad for you, but if you don't deal with the underlying problem you'll just switch from one thing to another. 1 week is an extremely short period of time.

FirewomanSam · 09/01/2022 19:05

It’s COMPLETELY FINE and I was the same! Treated myself to a soda stream when I went sober and it was the best thing I could have bought.

You are doing very well if you’ve replaced alcohol with sparkling water rather than sugar, which is usually the case for most people (me included) - nearly 3 years sober but my sugar consumption rocketed when I stopped and I still haven’t quite managed to bring it under control.

Nothingsfine · 09/01/2022 19:44

I've swapped alcohol for chocolate. Not ideal and I plan to work on it, but still hugely preferable to drinking.
