Lied on CV!

Hi,
Before anyone tells me I’ve made an error I know I have and can’t think right now.

For the last year I’ve stepped up in my role as my manager has left. I’ve essentially gone from being an assistant to a managers role with no recognition and pay rise. My job title and pay have not changed. I have worked my butt off for the last year or so without any recognition despite multiple attempts to have this changed.

I found a job which is very much suitable for me, however my job role currently is more of a executive role therefore stated on my CV that I am a sales executive rather then a sales assistant. I’m not super worried that my reference will say I am a sales assistant and my new job offer will be rejected.

Please help and tell me how I can rectify this. I am hundred percent sure that when my current employee will be asked about my job details they will confirm everything I have said but not confirm my job title as an executive.

Can you say you were seconded into the role?

Shitgotreal · 08/01/2022 20:11

@MadeForThis what do you mean by seconded into the role?

Merryoldgoat · 08/01/2022 20:11

If that’s all you’ve lied about then don’t worry at all. It won’t matter.

maffhew · 08/01/2022 20:12

They will be more interested in what the job entails than the title, surely?

AhNowTed · 08/01/2022 20:12

Don't fret. In sales people are called sorts of titles that don't reflect the actual role.... Sales Manager when they don't actually manage anyone.

I wouldn't see much difference between executive and assistant.

Shitgotreal · 08/01/2022 20:13

I am hundred percent sure they will give me an amazing reference and will stated everything I hve stated on my job responsibilities however I’m worried they will say my job title is a sales assistant where as I have stated sales executive

Honestly it doesn't matter. Your fretting needlessly. I've been in sales up to Director level for 30 years, and it wouldn't cost be a thought, nor would I consider it a lie.

Hunderland · 08/01/2022 20:18

Honestly, it won't make a difference. Salesperson, sales assistant, sales exec - all the same thing.

Shitgotreal · 08/01/2022 20:18

Do you think I should inform the recruiter?

Shitgotreal · 08/01/2022 20:19

Sorry I know I am over worrying but this job will change my life and its such a great opportunity for myself

They’ll only care about your experience and how well you do your job.

teaandchocolate1 · 08/01/2022 20:19

This is a difficult one and it could go either way. It depends on how anal your new company is on things like that

FlasherMcGruff · 08/01/2022 20:20

I honestly wouldn’t get stressed about such a minor wording issue! The terms are used interchangeably by companies. I have been looking at first PR jobs with my niece and some entry level job titles are ‘Account Executive’ and others are called ‘Account Assistant.’ And then you get Junior Account Executive and PR Officer. Even if it’s not the exact job title on your reference I don’t think it matters! Where you absolutely must ensure you tell the truth is when you list your responsibilities because everyone knows job tithes are a bit arbitrary but saying what the role actually involves is the determiner.

There’s no difference unless you also bullet pointed responsibilities that you claimed to have but don’t. The job title is fairly meaningless.

Redwinestillfine · 08/01/2022 20:22

If they query it jussay you have been acting up to sales executive

Shitgotreal · 08/01/2022 20:24

I could say it’s been made official and was the term that was used internally? Or what that make things worse. It’s such a great opportunity I don’t want to mess it up.

Nomorecoco · 08/01/2022 20:25

I changed my job role title in my CV because it didn't reflect what I actually do and my new one sounded better. My original title did show on my reference, but I just explained it when it was picked up but nothing else happened.
(I was actually advised to change this by a career advisor service)

FlasherMcGruff · 08/01/2022 20:25

If you are really very worried, tell the recruiter you noticed that the official job title on your contract is ‘assistant’ and ask if they’d like to update yours accordingly. I used to do the PR for recruitment agencies so I know many big agencies well as I cannot see this being any sort of problem at all.

Shitgotreal · 08/01/2022 20:25

It’s not been made official

OP posts:
FlasherMcGruff · 08/01/2022 20:26

*and, not as

FlasherMcGruff · 08/01/2022 20:26

If you are not officially an assistant then what’s the issue with writing executive?

NoNameHere12 · 08/01/2022 20:30

So what if it’s not official, that was what you was known as as you filled that position.

If you are asked about it, be direct, to the point and ensure what your saying sounds like a statement and not like an apology or excuse as that would then make it seem like you’ve lied. Am interview is to sell yourself, so do that. You haven’t lied, your previous company just hasn’t kept up with admin basically

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/01/2022 20:32

If you get an interview, then you have opportunity to talk about your current role, how you stepped up to take on your managers tasks and used the title on your cv to reflect your work. Unfortunately, it’s not been given to you permanently because your manager is …. (Going to come back?), which is why you are looking for a new role elsewhere to build on the skills you’ve developed.

Pleasethamk · 08/01/2022 20:33

Don’t you have to fill in a form that gets sent to current employer stating job role?

Autismandgin · 08/01/2022 20:37

I’m that’s such a minor error - please don’t worry!

Job titles can get mixed up especially when so many mean roughly the same thing.

Sometimes the role is the same but job titles differ slightly when someone new posts the advert.

I promise that this is a tiny error and you have nothing to worry about Flowers

In my last job I was referred to as marketing administrator, marketing assistant, marketing exec and marketing specialist. The latest was marketing analyst Grin

You’ll be ok Flowers

2bazookas · 08/01/2022 20:39

At interview, if questioned on job title, you can just say " When I started my current post, the job description and role was sales assistant . But after my manager left, I stepped up into their job and for the past year
I've been a sales executive. That experience has give me the confidence to apply for a more senior post with you".
