To ask how many hours you spend on phone daily?

I am seriously addicted to my phone, I genuinely can't put it down when I'm at rest. I can put it down if I'm driving or volunteering or cleaning but as soon as I sit down I am always on it. I try and watch a program or read a book but have to constantly pick it up. I can spend full days on it when my daughter is at her dads. My screen time app says my daily average is 8 hours and 28 minutes per day Blush

Can I ask what yours is? And does anyone have any tips on how to get over this awful addiction?

My daily average is 10 hours but I use it for work. Today it was 14 hours but I've been sharing good news. Still not good, time goes so quickly when I'm on it

Crankley · 08/01/2022 22:09

None. It's a PAYG. I put £20 on it a couple of years ago and last used it about two months ago to send a text to my cleaner.

Youdoyoutoday · 08/01/2022 22:12

I'm the same then I moan I have no time to do anything but I've some how managed to spend 5 hours a day on my phone!! It's ridiculous!!

Miriam101 · 08/01/2022 22:15

I know someone who traded in their smart phone for a seriously retro one like a Nokia or something. You know, something that could only receive/send texts or calls. I have no idea how easy that would be but if you were serious about wanting to change your habits......!

Twitterwhooooo · 08/01/2022 22:18

I only use my phone for calls/texts. Don't have social media installed on it.

But my default position when I'm at home has turned into being in front of my laptop for the last nearly two years.

TheCreamCaker · 08/01/2022 22:19

Bloody hell, people who are so addicted to their mobiles are extremely dull. There are so many things to do besides that - hobbies, sports, reading, learning a new skill or language, going out and getting some fresh air, anything but sitting holding a 'phone and tapping away at it for hours on end

My husband, one son, 2 grandchildren are all obsessed too. I love them, but Jesus Christ, they can be SO boring

TheCreamCaker · 08/01/2022 22:20

I probably text 3 friends most days (2 or 3 texts each) and make perhaps 1 call, often none.

NoraLuka · 08/01/2022 22:25

About 5 hours but that includes work emails etc. I think it depends what you’re using it for. If it’s adding something to your life (maybe watching films, staying in touch with friends, reading, apps like Duolingo etc) then surely it’s no worse than watching tv or reading a book? Or if you’re tired or stressed and just feel like sitting down and scrolling through social media for a while and that makes you happy then why not?

Maybe think about what else you should/want to do instead and try to do that before letting yourself use the phone, so you’ll automatically have less screen time.

Ilikecheeseontoast · 08/01/2022 22:33

Mine is about 2.5 hours a day. Checking emails, messages, WhatsApp groups, reading the news, online shopping if necessary and a bit of SM catch up in the evenings. I am trying to get below 2 hours though.

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 08/01/2022 22:46

I think in this it's important people include tablets and laptops. Some people are saying they never use their phone for anything except texts. Your on Mumsnet, it might be through a tablet but it's the same thing really

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 08/01/2022 22:48

Mine is dreadful. 6hrs on days off, a couple on days where I'm working (though lots spent in front of the laptop at work haha). Need to stop doing so much. I don't have a tablet, and my laptop is a work one so don't use it except for work. I do have a switch though which I play on roughly 1hr a day

FrogFairy · 08/01/2022 22:49

Not so much my phone, but I average around 12 hours per day on my iPad. I accept this is a problem as other areas of my life suffer as a result and if I am honest most of what I am looking at is a pile of old shit.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 08/01/2022 22:54

I’m the same, constantly have my phone on me when at rest. My daily screen time this week is 6.5 hours but I’m not allowed it on me at work or it would probably be higher, Christmas week when I was off work it was 10.5 hours!

Crankley · 08/01/2022 22:58

I'm on my laptop for about half an hour to an hour a day, check MN, book weekly supermarket delivery, check e-mails.
AllLopsided · 08/01/2022 23:04

Not much on my phone but about 7 hours a day on my iPad Blush

This does include 'useful' and 'necessary' things though such as emails, banking, grocery shopping and dealing with my health insurance (which takes bloody hours). And watching the odd TV programme in bed. I rarely use a laptop anymore.

I guess my music and audible listening is logged by my phone and would up the screen time a lot...

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 09/01/2022 09:00

8+ hours a day but I run my business through my phone and use it all day at work.

I'm a dog walker, so I use the camera to take photos for my business social media and to send to individual clients.

I use Spotify to play music in the car when I'm driving as it helps settle the dogs and stops them barking, plus I'd rather listen to that than the radio.

I check my business page through the day and use photo editing apps to put collages of photos together to put on social media so clients can see what their dogs have been up to.

And yes, on my breaks I'll browse MN or message friends on Facebook or have a scroll of Reddit but I'm an introvert and enjoy doing those things. I like spending most of my down time on my own.

It's not a waste of life/time if it's what you enjoy doing Smile

LethargeMarg · 09/01/2022 09:13

For me a really bad day is 4/5 hours and that's when I'm on a day off or as recently - isolating !
My New Years resolution is to be 2 hours max

crazyjinglist · 09/01/2022 09:23

Not quite as much as you, OP, but a lot.

I find it very odd that there are people on this thread sneering that someone is a 'perfectionista' if they don't spend much time on their phone. Or not even believing that anyone could possibly not be spending hours on their phone unless they spending hours on a laptop or watching tv instead. I'm pretty addicted, but I don't kid myself that literally everybody else is too! There are people who simply don't do this. Either because they never got addicted, or because they've taken drastic action to stop it.

One of my New Year's resolutions is to take a 'digital Sabbath'. I switched my phone of at 6pm on Friday and didn't switch it back on until 6pm yesterday. It was actually lovely. I felt more chilled out but also got more done. I've been sitting here on my phone for an hour now and am finding myself wishing it was switched off Confused.

ARicher22 · 09/01/2022 11:05

I thought my online time was going to be similar to yours OP, and then was pleased with my self I'm 'only' averaging 7 hours Blush need to give my head wobble as that is still terrible and basically the equivalent of a full time job is spent mindlessly scrolling through crap on my phone. (I havnt included laptop time in this as I only really use that for actually work/ essential stuff).

Kinsters · 09/01/2022 11:52

It's 8:30pm here and I've clocked up 2.5 hours and today was a fairly phone heavy day. I'll probably have another hour or so later depending on how long the kids take to put to bed.
