If not possible you must wait.

Those of us who live and use country lanes with no alternative are now going to take hours to get anywhere.

Love that the OP is only interested in not getting into trouble. Not like the rule is there to keep everyone safe…

As a rider it's actually far scarier riding on a two-lane road where there is plenty of width as on these cars think they can whoosh past you at 30+mph with no consequence.

I used to have to cross one such road on horseback to get from the stables to the large network of bridleways. Believe me, a rider will only be on this type of road for the shortest possible time they can, it's no fun at all. But they may well need to hold up traffic/ride two abreast/slow people down in order to get on and off a road safely.

The other Highway Code rule that no one seems to know is about horses at roundabouts. Doesn't happen often but they will always use the outside lane - reason being if they bolt, they will have one direction to point the horse in that is hopefully grass/verge rather than being stuck between two lanes of cars which is when most horses would be most stressed.
