Keeping my 11 month old cat warm

I just got my gorgeous boy at Easter; he is short haired ginger variety. As the time has come for the cold weather, now really low temperatures, I do not keep heating on all night, I doubt anyone does.
I got a self body warming mat, but he seems to hate the cracle noise it makes, so hasn't sat on it long enough to realise how warm it gets. I have heard this before; I am worried about an electric blanket type of cat mat however for all sorts of reasons. Has anyone come across a blanket that does the trick? I had a "cellular" baby blanket for all of my babies, lightweught but really trapped the heat? The other thought was a coat for him; I would try all of these things out for myself, but having had my 3rd booster I am not feeling to well and returns at the Post Office mean lots of people coughing and spluttering all around?

I would be grateful for any suggestions please.

I really think you are overthinking. Give him a blanket to sleep on. He's a cat. I've never seen a cold cat!

Put your favourite warmest jumper on your favourite chair and buy an expensive cat cave. Cat will snuggle into your favourite jumper and look cosy. Cat will know that you have no jumper, no favourite chair and have wasted money on cat cave. Be grateful that you have pleased your Master.

BaronessBomburst · 08/01/2022 09:55

Surely he'll just come and sleep with you if he's cold?

Roominmyhouse · 08/01/2022 09:59

@Rinoachicken

Rest assured, whatever special thing you buy for him will be ignored and he’ll find a cardboard box or something!
Exactly this! Our cats have the kitchen and conservatory with a cat flap outdoors at night. We shut the door between the two so the kitchen is warm and they have beds in there but they’d rather sleep in a cardboard box in the cold conservatory!

My indoor cat is 16 and has never had any of these things. The thermostat is off at night and the house rarely gets above 17c in winter as we find it too hot.

She does have woolen beds in her old age, but mostly just steals a dog bed.

Your cat will find where he wants to sleep and keep warm wherever they like!

If I put a hot water bottle under a blanket my cat always sleeps on it, she also likes behind the TV when thats been on.

you can get microwave heat pads for animals which would be safer than a hot water bottle. fur fleece blankets are good as they are soft and encourage snuggling. I would look into a cave/igloo type bed we have one for our chihuahua who is quite tiny one of them has a soft sheepskin cushion in the bottom and we put a little blanket in for snuggling but if he does not want the blanket he pushes it out.

Idontbelieveit14 · 08/01/2022 10:03

He’ll be fine, I have 3 cats, one insists on going out at night even when it’s freezing!

ditalini · 08/01/2022 10:10

Your cat will already have grown a set of nice winter thermals for this purpose which he will moult all over your house in the spring.

viques · 08/01/2022 10:10

Mine used to sleep in odd places, then I walked passed in bare feet and realised they had sussed out places where hot water pipes were under the floor! If ever you feel the place where a cat has been sleeping for a while, eg a sofa, you will realise they are quite effective little heaters and generate their own warmth, not to say they don’t appreciate a bit of help like a warm lap.

Larryyourwaiter · 08/01/2022 10:11

I’d just put a fuzzy blanket where he sleeps and he will be fine. If he gets really cold he will come to bed for body heat.

Pleasebeafleabite · 08/01/2022 10:12

Grin at the posters who keep their heating on all night for the cat

That’s made my morning. Lucky cats

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 08/01/2022 10:13

He doesn't need any of these things Grin

TicTac80 · 08/01/2022 10:20

My cats just choose where they want to sleep. Normally one of our beds!!! They do/did have cat beds, but they can't be arsed with those when there are sofas with warm throws or beds to sleep on!! I don't have the heating on at night, too damned expensive!!

LittleBearPad · 08/01/2022 10:34

He’s a cat. He has fur. He’s in a house where it’s not going to get that cold. He’s trained you well however.

montysma1 · 08/01/2022 10:39

Hot water bottle in his bed

SilverGlassHare · 08/01/2022 10:48

You shouldn’t leave an electric blanket plugged in overnight, shouldn’t you? -I’m sure it’s a fire risk.

SoupDragon · 08/01/2022 11:20

Buy him a little furry sleep suit... oh, wait...

SoupDragon · 08/01/2022 11:21

Your cat has definitely made you his cat slave in every possible way, bless him. Let's hope he never gets opposable thumbs!

quitefranklyabsurd · 08/01/2022 11:39

It’ll sort its self out. We have three and they all sleep in different places at different times of the year. They don’t need all these bonkers contraptions. One of ours at the moment favours an old pillow in a box the other has taken to sleeping in the middle of the landing……

AuntyMabelandPippin · 08/01/2022 11:41

Ours sleep outside in all weathers. Not had one frozen yet.

trumpisagit · 08/01/2022 11:48

A DSH ginger Tom is about as tough as they get. He's not going to be cold, and if he is he will let you know.
Cats are amazing at finding the warmest spot in the house.

Cats are amazing at finding the warmest spot in the house.

Mine sits at the top of the stairs as there are pipes under the floor. She is going to kill me one day!

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 08/01/2022 11:54

I got mine a little pullover for when she goes out into the garden as she's very small and feels the cold. She's not impressed, as you can see.

Overnight I use an enclosed cat bed with a not too hot hot water bottle underneath the inside pad. She likes this method.
