To think so many middle-class clothes are ugly?

I admit I am hardly a style guru. But when I joined Mumsnet people talked about lots of companies I had never heard of like Toast. So I followed links of clothes posted and looked at the websites mentioned. And was shocked at how ugly so much of the clothing was.
Shapeless grey dresses. Black loose trousers teamed with black tunics which make the model look like she is a member of a cult. Shapeless brown t-shirts.
They are just so ugly. AIBU?

links please. Or pictures.

WorraLiberty · 07/01/2022 11:11

One person's ugly is another person's pretty.

Love the thought of clothes being middle class though. Who knew? 🤣

itsanothernamechangeforme · 07/01/2022 11:12

Style & Beauty definitely isn't my cup of tea, but then I don't think anybody on that board would be particularly impressed with my style choices, horses for courses 🤷🏼‍♀️

JuergenSchwarzwald · 07/01/2022 11:12

Not sure they are middle class but I find most dresses hideous unless they are evening dresses.

Mushrooms0up · 07/01/2022 11:13

I agree! A lot of stereotypically middle class clothes like seasalt, toast, Boden can be quite dowdy.

But it will be a better quality and more timeless than say New look and primark

Cocomarine · 07/01/2022 11:14

I wear a shapeless grey dress, and I look like I’m in a sack.

My middle class 🤣 friend adds some statement jewellery and carries herself more confidently than me and all of a sudden she’s wearing something interesting that has a shape that’s unusual and interesting, rather than shapeless.

The difference is confidence not class - though discuss if you wish the link between the two 😉

HotChocolate16 · 07/01/2022 11:14

😂😂😂😂😂 absolutely love this! And I do agree as well

RoyalFamilyFan · 07/01/2022 11:15

This is the cult look.

95% of the things people link to on here make me want to run and hide.

ilovesooty · 07/01/2022 11:17

I don't get this stuff about class. I'd never thought about clothes in terms of class anyway. I don't think I've ever looked at Boden or Toast clothes.

RoyalFamilyFan · 07/01/2022 11:17

This dress! It might look okay on a three-year-old. Or a woman who is part of a Christian cult who has 19 children and bakes her own bread after hand milling the grains.

I’d wear that dress. I’m always drawn to a whiff of the Amish though.

RoyalFamilyFan · 07/01/2022 11:19

Or this. It is incredibly ugly. How can anyone see this and decide to buy it?

I'd wear it! Not an art teacher Grin
UserBot989 · 07/01/2022 11:21

Well you're not wrong about Toast. I'm 5'1" and would look like a bag lady in Toast clothes. They might look better on taller people but it's no challenge to look good when you're tall. On the rest of us, all those Amish dresses and wide legged trousers with peaky blinders boots......... it's not going to make you look stylish. People are going to wonder if you are feeling ok about yourself. I do wonder how wide their target audience could possibly be. Some of their jumpers are nice but the price of them Shock

Boden clothes are just so patterned and I think that's their niche now. If you want something garish, that's where you go.

I like Mint Velvet and Hush though but you can often find similar stuff for much much cheaper.

Itsnotdeep · 07/01/2022 11:21

Are working class clothes attractive?

Bitofachinwag · 07/01/2022 11:21

What do you wear OP? Please post links to your favourite outfit .

DockOTheBay · 07/01/2022 11:22

Those ones you've linked to are grim but I've never seen anyone wearing anything like that. The "middle class" friends I have usually wear stuff from Joules or Boden which look pretty nice.

RoyalFamilyFan · 07/01/2022 11:22

@Cocomarine There is a clear link between class and confidence. Discrimination and low social status are not good for confidence.
But I think a shapeless grey dress looks ugly to whoever is wearing it. On many of these websites, they have very beautiful models wearing g the clothes, and still, the clothes look incredibly ugly.
I do not understand why anyone would want to buy this stuff. If you are buying these clothes then you have the money to buy really nice stuff.

Yes!!! I feel the same about Lucy and yak jumpsuit things, perfect for a 3 year old girl, not a grown woman 😫

LemonMuffins · 07/01/2022 11:23

I find COS to be the worst offender. Always recommended on here. Always shapeless and bland.

SlashBeef · 07/01/2022 11:24

I don't think I've ever seen anyone wear stuff like that in real life. What the fuck is that lacy collar playsuit

IncompleteSenten · 07/01/2022 11:24

We have clothes we have to wear based on our class now? 😂😂😂

Just wear what you like like all normal people do. Of all classes.

KatherineJaneway · 07/01/2022 11:24

Looks like she was a presenter on Rainbow or Play School
