Is fairy tale of New York a sackable offence ?

My OH played fairy tale of New York the censored version on a zoom Christmas party, he works in IT contracting moved from financial services to the public sector. They are now saying many people got offended and hurt by the song and they are wondering if he's a good cultural fit for this department .

AIBU to think this is absolutely ridiculous ? My OH is already looking for another job as the field is such in high demand he's not worried. They also waited until today to tell him instead of a month ago when the supposed incident happened.

@KittenKong

Gammon frothers? Yuk what a revolting expression.
Isn't it just? Anyone using the expression "gammon" should have a wee think to themselves.
KittenKong · 07/01/2022 21:43

I’m assuming they mean white (men)? So they think that there were no non-white ex-service men (and women) who are offended by that annual ‘I’m not wearing a poppy’ foot stamping?

Yes , they mean white men and at least middle aged or older. Even if white men were the only people who expressed "poppy rage" it still doesn't justify using such a derogatory term.

People do love an insult don’t they.

Idontknowlondon · 07/01/2022 22:13

@FortunesFave

Given they waited this long, I suspect it's just an excuse to make him leave.

Sure do. Especially those desperately justifying the use of the word faggot but objecting to gammon.
Morgysmum · 08/01/2022 17:23

No,
It was the censored version, god forbid the hear the original. 🤦‍♀️ Snowflakes.

sarahangel778 · 08/01/2022 17:27

If there is nothing in the policy about censoring certain material or adhering to certain cultural expectations then they have no justification to even discipline him. He could actually argue that “not being a good cultural fit” is discrimination towards him on their part. My sister has an employment law company. Search HR Employment Law on Twitter. I’m sure she can answer your question.

Bonbud · 08/01/2022 17:32

Omg what a bunch of snowflakes .People get offended by literally everything these days Hmm

KarenTheGammonRemoaner · 08/01/2022 17:34

Wow. How do the eternally offended carry on in this world? Are they all on heavy drugs? How pathetic.

Bunchymcbunchface · 08/01/2022 17:35

I’m a work where FTONY is offensive but Wet A* Pusy is fine Hmm
Google the lyrics if you’ve not heard it….

Not a sackable offence unless management put out a list of music that can't be played... Even if people complained, it is not even a disciplinary event... People really fo need to get over themselves and get a life!

Rtruth · 08/01/2022 17:39

PC gone mad, but also it’s not timely in terms of feedback.

ultra88 · 08/01/2022 17:40

It's always baffled me why that Christmas song is deemed offensive but the John Lennon's Christmas song referencing black ones and white ones. Red ones and yellow ones isn't deemed offensive? .

marktayloruk · 08/01/2022 17:41

Why don't the bosses tell the complainants not to be so touchy?

Momicrone · 08/01/2022 17:45

Bunchymunch - but you could argue WAP is sung by a woman so not quite the same

Benjispruce5 · 08/01/2022 17:54

What? It’s two drunks on the streets of NYC, how would you think they would speak?
Can’t cope with the overzealous woke brigade.

alphabetsoup1980 · 08/01/2022 17:55

@Samcro

My ds was told not to play the sound of silence by disturbed at work as it was too epic. FTOYY is not offensive.
love that version!!!!!!
eagerlywaitingfor · 08/01/2022 17:57

If they are still playing FTONY on Radio 2 I really can't see an issue. Some people just go out looking to be offended for the sake of it. There are bigger things to worry about.

Whenever I hear it all I can think about is the tragedy of Kirsty MacColl's untimely death.

Exactly!! Grin
WhatScratch · 08/01/2022 18:06

Did they know it was the censored version or did they assume it was the original version?

If I were your OH I’d go for being genuinely shocked and a little offended that anyone would even think that he would play the uncensored version. Do they think he’s some kind of bigot?

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 08/01/2022 18:09

Yep.

Language changes, words become more or less offensive. Fuck is far less offensive than it was 20 years ago, f**t has gone in the other direction. By all means bleep it or use the alternate version of the song but keep a sense of proportion. 11 year olds are accessing gang rape porn. The whole of popular culture is saturated with the objectification and sexualisation of girls and young women. Where are the protests about that?

RantyAunty · 08/01/2022 18:10

Glad he's going to get another role.

Hopefully he gets at least a 25% bump in his rate.

2DogsOnMySofa · 08/01/2022 18:14

Public sector roles can be a bit bonkers re the pc brigade. I work with them a lot if the time and have to be sooooo careful of what I do and don't say. I'm a supplier I'd have to be extra careful I don't accideny put my foot in it. Tbh I doubt it's an excuse to get rid of him, if he's a contractor they just tell him not to come in the next day - job done.

If his skills are in high demand then he just takes another contract.
