To hate with a raging passion those flashing cycle lights

Why in anyone's God's name are those things allowed. They are so bright and distracting that if some one walked out in front of my car I wouldn't see them due to being blinded by an oncoming cyclist with their flashing strobes of death.

Driving

Biker47 · 06/01/2022 23:06

Don't mind cyclists having decent lights, I do however mind them pointing them horizontally at eye level, blinding everyone driving towards them, recently one dickhead had what seemed like a million watt floodlight bolted to his helmet, and was looking everywhere, including into the eyes of oncoming traffic, there's a reason why car main headlights are dipped beams.

ShadowGirls · 06/01/2022 23:06

Be aware of the lights but don't look directly at them

genome · 06/01/2022 23:11

I find the flashing lights make it hard to judge how far away the cyclist is. They are bright, but not as blinding as a lot of car headlights are! I can see the logic of flashing ones in attracting attention, but they definitely aren't without problems in terms of distance perception.

ThesecondLEM · 06/01/2022 23:14

As a new cycle to work commutor I'm bemused by flashing lights. I have very bright front lights that the default is flashing but I turn them onto straight constant light. I cycle mostly along the sea front and its DARK. I need bright lights. On the road I need to be seen.

Really surprised at the haters though. I cycle on shared paths with lots of off lead dogs, I couldn't cycle fast if I tried and I am careful and polite but my God, the looks I get!! I'm just trying to get home/work ffs.

Downsize2021 · 06/01/2022 23:19

I hate super bright lights. I but middle of the market lights but then i was also hurled off my bike twice with static lights pulling in in front of me to park in a cycle lsne and knocking me into the pavement. And no. I don't run red lights. I dont cross àt pedestrian crossings. I follow the rules of the road and i stull got knocked down.

Downsize2021 · 06/01/2022 23:20

*i buy middle of the market lights

So not the super bright ones

Downsize2021 · 06/01/2022 23:22

Just re read that and you'd not believe I'm abstaining from alcohol for January!

JustSinginIntheRain · 06/01/2022 23:23

I like it when cyclists have lots of lights. Flashing lights don't bother me, but cyclists with no lights are a problem.

hedgehogger1 · 06/01/2022 23:40

I hate flashing lights. Also not keen on the cyclists wearing an entirely black outfit so all there is is the flashing light. A high viz jacket makes so much difference and I think they should be compulsory

WrongWayApricot · 06/01/2022 23:45

I love them, I love cyclists that do all the flashy things. What I can't stand is cyclists with no lights or high vis at night.

RedWingBoots · 06/01/2022 23:46

I cycle with 2 front lights one flashing and one not.

Shunter350 · 06/01/2022 23:56

I remember reading that the DoT were assessing cycle lights but I’ve yet to read about any progress. Cycle lights are unregulated and it would seem anything goes, including having no lights at all..
I agree that some are blinding and unlike motor car lights can be pointing in any direction..
Can I also bring up the issue of cars running around in the dark with no head or tail lights, the drivers ( clearly unable to operate the vehicle ) assuming that illuminated instrument lights and daylight running lights constitute night time lights?

cushioncovers · 07/01/2022 07:14

As a migraine sufferer I hate those flashing lights.

FixTheBone · 07/01/2022 07:22

www.bikeradar.com/features/bike-light-laws-in-the-uk-what-you-need-to-know/

Flashing lights perfectly legal.

We're all entitled to dislike things that are legal.

mogsrus · 07/01/2022 07:41

Hate them with a passion, but my absolute biggest hate, & concern is when they are in the cycle lane on your side of the road coming toward you ,, it’s bad enough in daylight but at night it’s a terrible distraction to the motorist, you have got to be on something to even contemplate that! but it’s the same with those damn scooters as well

Momicrone · 07/01/2022 08:02

If depth of vision is such a great problem just slow down or wait until 'hazard' has passed

Momicrone · 07/01/2022 08:09

Mogrus, basically you want the road to yourself

Rummikub · 07/01/2022 08:16

I was shocked the first time I saw a scooter in cycle lane coming towards me.
Are cycle lanes 2 way?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/01/2022 08:22

Another one who hates the strobing due to migraines. As a pedestrian I have to turn away.

somewhereoverthechipshop · 07/01/2022 08:26

What are you on about op? I’ve never even noticed them, no more than any other light on the road. You must have very sensitive eyes/bad eye sight.

somewhereoverthechipshop · 07/01/2022 08:27

I’m glad when they have clear lights so I can see them clearly and pass them safely

Momicrone · 07/01/2022 08:30

The horse n carriage crew probably moaned about cars in the olden days too, didn't stop the march of progress

expatmigrant · 07/01/2022 08:31

@Offmyfence

On a hiding to nothing here...I've decided not to comment on any anti-cyclist thread now as I go by the motto...'you can't argue with stupid'.
I will enjoy my 100km ride this morning whilst the keyboard warriors sit on their spreading arses Grin

Momicrone · 07/01/2022 08:31

Rummikub, cycle lanes can be one way or a wider 2 way
