Rats in next doors garden

We love our house, a lovely Victorian end terrace in a great area. We’ve lived here for years and have three under three. It’s a great neighbourhood with great neighbors

Apart from the couple next door. Very young, very posh, very rude.

And their house is a SHIT HOLE. They have a garden full of crap. They only use the house for when they are going out in the city or when they are this way for work, they live somewhere else probably 75% of the time.

They have now got rats in the garden. They put down traps but still got the problem and not really addressing it because they are not often here.

Normally I would be a bit annoyed but whatever it’s their home

However they have access through our garden to put the bins out.

Advice?

They are already not my biggest fans because they were getting parcels delivered while they weren’t here nearly every day for weeks and I said enough is enough for me to take them in on their behalf.

I don’t really care if I come across as the arsehole neighbour I just want to know what I can do

Hmm no advice but our neighbour across the street has been asked by her NDN to stop putting out so much food for the birds because so many rats have moved in. Her answer? Oh I'm not feeding the birds. I'm feeding the "gerbils" that live under the shed...."

THough would your local authority environmental health team help?

MatildaTheCat · 06/01/2022 17:34

I don’t think there’s much you can do. They have access rights over your land but how does that impact the rat situation?

We’ve recently had a rat problem in our house. Cold rats will very likely look for a way in and can cause really severe damage so possibly warning them of this might get them to take more notice.

Rats would love a mostly empty house, your neighbours might get a nasty surprise when they turn up. I am not suggesting you let the rats in there, they will find it on their own before long.

Our next door neighbours garden is full of dog poo, which I am consideri ng reporting to the Environmental Health. However, then you get into a dispute with the neighbours which is often the start of something very unpleasant. If they are not permanently living there this might not be an issue. I wonder if EH would consider that the issue is being dealt with because traps are being put down . Worth a shot though

Get a pest controller in to put down bait boxes in your garden. They're almost certainly accessing your garden too, so it will control the numbers

Omg 😂😂😂

We have a rat problem and currently have traps down (from pest control)- they haven’t worked yet but I’m not sure what else we / your neighbours could do?

CherryMaple · 07/01/2022 05:21

@icklekid

Where we live, pest control seem to always opt for poison. Are traps as effective?

Dontletthemuggglesgetyoudown · 07/01/2022 05:38

Grin at the gerbils under the shed

drpet49 · 07/01/2022 07:15

You can report this to environmental health at the council

I’ll be honest… I have no idea! They haven’t been so far. They were meant to come yesterday to check again, will see what their plan b is!

love this one , its brilliant , if i ever have rats in mine , i will remember to say they are only gerbils lol

EH at local authority, they have "right of entry". They aren't interested in a garden full of fog crap,I know from personal experience

nannybeach · 07/01/2022 07:20

I typed dog twice and the phone changed it to fog!
