Nurses with a needle phobia

I'd like a sanity check please to see if my thinking is faulty. My sister is dating this guy who is a nurse. He told her yesterday that he is scared of needles and when she asked about how he was able to inject other people, he said that it didn't bother him as it wasn't happening to him.

My AIBU is: doesn't that show a lack of empathy?

So YABU = it's not a sign of a lack of empathy

YANBU = tell her to run a mile

The nurse in my GP practice said that one of the GPs is the worst patient when it comes to him having injections!

What earth are you talking about. Of course it doesn't show a lack of empathy and its extremely common. My wonderful midwife gave me tonnes of injections plus a catheter and a canula. She hates needles herself and told me she fainted getting her covid Vax and flu shot that year. I completely understood.

You're the one with no empathy surely?

Rainartist · 06/01/2022 07:58

I'm a HCP I do an lot of different procedures on patients I don't want doing on me!

In fact probably more so because I know exactly what will happen when often a patient has a benign ignorance about what is to come. I'm not keen on needles but look away and shut my eyes Grin

I was told years ago that I have beginnings of a cataract. They won't treat until it's really bad which will be years away but omg since observing the operation I am terrified!! A scalpel to your eye Shock

I'm a nurse, hate needles, used to be quite phobic but worked at it and can cope with them now. It's really helped me support and empathise with my needle phobic patients.

YABVU, along with the 27 people who have voted that your sister should run a mile. OTT reaction.

I trained as an HCP and was very needle phobic...had my jabs at the latest time possible before going on placement. Had a lot of pep talk from my lecturers, along with end of day OH appointments that were 90 min long (due to me freaking out, refusing to go in etc) and I had just one jab at a time, so it took weeks for me to get them all done.

A lot of healthcare workers are needle phobic. It is not unusual at all.

FluffyBooBoo · 06/01/2022 12:34

Surely it's the exact opposite? Being phobic of needles means that he'll be more understanding of others that have issues with injections?
