Tbh tho I didnt really go in for baby proofing stuff. Nearly all of it causes more issues than it solves (eg plug socket covers, cupboard latches)

MarshaBradyo · 05/01/2022 21:55

We didn’t do stair gates or plug covers

But older dc were a fair bit older so I would stay with youngest and close door of room etc

I think some sliding down backwards at one stage too

I didn't do any of the child proof things either. No accidents or injuries to report.

We have them but in the doorway not on the actual stairs. My 2 year old is fine on the stairs but they are handy for stopping her getting to certain things that I keep the other side!

Lucky you. I don't have anything other than stair gates either, but toddler can open all the doors. So I can't ever contain them.

I never used them for mine. They were always in places where I could see them/get to them quickly and they learned to move around safely soon enough.

@Justheretoaskaquestion91

We actually don’t close the one at the top of the stairs at night though, not since 3 year old sleep walked once, as I was so scared he would sleep climb over it.

I don’t understand the point of people not having stair gates at the top AND the bottom though. Surely you need them both ends?

I only used them between 5 months when DS started crawling, to 9 months when he learnt to go down backwards. He only crawled up the stairs to follow someone so once he was up you could shut the gate behind him.

Plug socket covers can make outlets unsafe & are only really useful when you have really old sockets. Modern sockets are already designed to be child safe. But this is the age old point that children under school age shouldn’t be roaming around the house unsupervised. I know many do and for short periods of time it probably is required in some families, but a parent who leaves their preschool aged child to roam unsupervised all day probably isn’t doing the best job in terms of parenting.

Never had them,4 kids no accidents, I even had a newborn and 1 year old and at one point 4 under 7, never felt the need like I said no accidents 🤷🏻‍♀️

Removed mine when found 2 year old stood on top of the gate at the top.

He's 12 now.

hennaoj · 07/01/2022 19:56

My youngest at 2 years of age broke the top one, then broke the bottom one by actually sheering it in half when he pulled at it. A Lindam one! He's huge, the size of an 11 year old at the age of 8 and very strong.
