AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

Own a small business selling handmade items.

On the 1st of January I put a code on my website for a January sale as lots of businesses do (January sales are hardly a new concept?!)

Anyway, had an email this afternoon from someone who ordered on 24th December to say she thinks it's very annoying when businesses put offer codes on just after you've purchased something and that we should refund the percentage of her order to match the January discount Confused

I'm genuinely stumped.

  1. All sales have to start at some time, I can't go back and give every person who ordered before then the same discount.
  1. Surely it's pretty common knowledge that most places, if they are going to be doing sales around this time, it will be in January. If you wanted to see if I was doing one, why not wait until then?

AIBU?!

I suspect she may be American. Over there if something goes on sale within a certain amount of time after purchased they will indeed refund the difference upon production of the receipt.

How annoying for her not to get January sales prices, in December.🙄

CompletelyPotts · 05/01/2022 17:15

It is annoying but that's life and someone is always going to miss out, unless you have a year round discount in which case it isn't really a special offer, just the regular price.

I ordered two posters from notonthehighstreet a few weeks ago
One for me and one for my son
I sent one to him and the other is on my kitchen wall
I go to have another look on something else and the same posters have a few quid off
I think I would have saved about £6 if I’d ordered them now
It’s not even dawned on me to get in touch and demand some money back-the January sales are just that-a sale in January
Cheeky cow-She’s trying it on

The only way that’s reasonable would be if she’s still in the window to return her item? If so she could return it for full refund, then just buy it again but in the sale.

I’ve done that a couple of times with big purchases where I didn’t know they were about to reduce. We actually got £450 off some furniture lately as it went on sale 2 days after we’d bought it and the company was happy to give us the money back rather than have the hassle of us returning and reordering.

But even then I wouldn’t bother for a small amount.

Please don't indulge this CF and encourage future arseholery.

To be honest i personally think of 'boxing day sales' not 'January sales'

However that's just me and completely besides the point. Especially as she ordered on christmas eve - before christmas!!

The only reason she would be reasonable to ask for the difference refunded would be if she was still inside return/refund time and would otherwise order again for the reduced price and send the original back for a refund of the full price. In this case it would save you money and time to just refund her the difference.

However in any other instance she is being a CF. Things change price all the time. I can't imagine she'd be contacting you offering to pay more if you put your prices up in january instead of down. And common sense is that things always cost more before christmas than after.

Offer her something off her next order?

longtompot · 05/01/2022 19:59

YANBU

I have ordered things from websites and signed up to their newsletter to get the discount they offer for your first order, but the discount doesn't come through and I've needed the item so ordered. Then the email comes in! I have then contacted the company and asked if it would at all be possible to take the discount into account and some have said yes and some have said you can use it on your next order.
But, I wouldn't not do this for a Jan sale when I ordered the item in December. That is cheeky.

IncompleteSenten · 06/01/2022 14:10

Please please please don't reward these arseholes for being twats. It just means they try it on with the rest of us!

EasterIssland · 06/01/2022 14:15

Is this cf entitled to a return/ refuted yet? I take you’ve a x days return policy. Could she return it and buy it again? If so I’d just give them a refund and you might keep a customer

thickthighs73 · 06/01/2022 14:17

CF! January sales are just that. I wouldn’t even waste my time with a response to be honest

FlasherMcGruff · 06/01/2022 20:06

The cheeky bugger. She’s not entitled to a penny of discount in January or at any other time. If you choose to have a sale, of course you get to pick when and by how much discount! When does she think the January sales start?! The whole point is for most retailers to try to secure full-price sales until Christmas and then to reduce things either on Boxing Day or, if a very small business where the owner is actually on holiday, later. She’s a chancer. How much money would the discount have given her? If it’s only a few quid she’s being even more ridiculous.
