Just that. My gut has taken
On a new identity.it's huge , not bloated but actually fat.Or fatter. Wobbly, hanging a little.I was a size 14 hourglass. I am
Now a size 14/16 apple for context.
Three months into HRT and intake/ output has not changed.
Any tips helpful too btw!

I haven’t found that, may just be me though. I’ve been on HRT for 10 months.

lljkk · 04/01/2022 21:09

mmm...
Sorry you find your body changes annoying.

most women starting HRT are what... age 45+ ?
Most women age 45+ are on a weight gain trajectory
Most women (with or without HRT) will gain weight after menopause

So you'd want to ask, given that most women age 45+ will gain weight, does HRT cause extra weight gain, for post-menop women?

The review did not find any evidence that HRT prevents weight gain experienced at menopause. Dates from 2000

Also old, 1997, This didn't find that HRT made a difference to body shape

Interesting, from 2008, HRT helped with 3/9 quality of live measurements, and not 6/9. Weight not mentioned, though.

2021 published - HRT or not, had no meaningful impact on weight.

Ok.thanks. I am looking forward to reading those links but I guess I haven't reduced my calorific intake over the last few years. I think it's time to join a healthy eating programme!

I don’t believe it’s inevitable, no. I started HRT in May 21. I initially gained some bloat weight - mostly from ridiculously swollen boobs 🤦‍♀️ That settled after 3 months & weight/bloat disappeared. I do think our metabolism changes with age & since my mid 40’s I have exercised regularly & eaten more healthily. Sleep is a significant factor in weight gain, as is stress; both of which typically go awry for women of peri/menopausal age.

QueenOfHiraeth · 04/01/2022 21:40

Maybe it varies between women. I have always gained weight quite dramatically with pills, especially the mini pill, so suspect I might have gained with HRT which is one of the reasons I decided to avoid it

Darbs76 · 04/01/2022 21:42

As you age you need less calories. Try putting half your age into a TDEE calculator and you can see how much less. That’s why people get middle age spread, as they need less calories but most don’t reduce calories unless dieting. I don’t think it’s inevitable to gain weight via medication as the weight gain comes from eating more. If you reduced calories / upped steps I’m sure you’d have no problems losing it

hamstersarse · 04/01/2022 21:44

I just quit hrt because I put on weight. Not much but it was pissing me off as I’m really careful about no junk at all, and I exercise daily.
The weight gain wasn’t diet related it was definitely HRT
I’ve already lost a few pounds, no dietary changes but I am interested to see if the layer just goes now

Babymamamama · 04/01/2022 21:47

I’ve counterbalanced by doing intermittent fasting. Otherwise I would have been obese.

RoyKentsChestHair · 04/01/2022 21:48

I didn’t find this tbh. I’ve been on it about 6 months, recently increased dose to 100mcg patch + utrogesten (sp?) tablets. I was putting on weight at an alarming rate before this, but once I started HRT it seemed to Stand still for the first time in ages.

Have recently separated from DP so have been feeling quite stressed and depressed. Without even trying I’ve lost a stone in less than a month. I also have an under active thyroid which has made me realise that my metabolism has a mind of its own, not really related to how much I eat or whether or not I feel hungry most of the time!

Hope you find a balance that makes you happy.

Melassa · 04/01/2022 21:49

I’ve not gained weight, in fact the excess belly I was beginning to develop has reduced to “normal” excess since I’ve been on HRT. Before HRT I started to struggle with doing up trousers, but now we’re back to normal.

I have been increasing my exercise though, mainly because my family has a history of osteoporosis and I wanted to stave it off as much as possible. I’ve also noticed I can’t get away with eating crap quite as much as before. I’ve not modified my diet hugely but have cut out the sweet snacks and cut down on crisps. I’m in my 50s and while I struggle to fit in my tinier trousers I still easily fit into a size 8-10.

ILoveYouMoreTheEnd · 04/01/2022 21:51

I've just started month 5 of Femeston and starting to lose weight. I've lost 10lbs in total. Initially I ballooned and omg my boobs were huge! My arse looked like I had implants and my belly was so swollen. I felt I was carrying 2 boulders in my bra lol 😆
It all settled about halfway through my second packet and then my energy increased I was walking more and not wallowing and eating shit. Xx

5128gap · 04/01/2022 21:53

Not on HRT, but 52 and regained and maintaining my 37, 24, 37. BUT, only by keeping under 1800 calories a day, vegetarian whole foods, no alcohol except special occasions, and 30 mins fast walking every day. Slip on any of these and the belly fat start to come back. I heard HRT helped keep it off and was considering it for this reason.

Svolvaer · 04/01/2022 21:54

I’ve been on HRT for 20 plus years (very early hysterectomy) and I haven’t found it’s had any effect on my weight or my shape at all. I have put on some weight (and lost it again) over the years but that’s been emotional eating in difficult times so I can’t blame it on the HRT.

Hankunamatata · 04/01/2022 21:55

The opposite.

abra1d1 · 04/01/2022 21:55

There’s no change in my weight two years plus into taking HRT.

I’m 58 now and keep a close eye on diet and exercise. My BMI stays around 21 or just below. I think HRT helps me sleep and gives me more energy for working out.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 04/01/2022 21:58

I put 20 kilos on with the menopause, HRT slowed down the excessive weight gain, but if I don't stick to 12-1500 calories a day, it goes back on. And I do 2 hours of yoga and 2-3 bootcamps a week. Sigh

Mummacake · 04/01/2022 22:19

Have also gained a lot weight on hrt but not helped by an injury which means I struggle to exercise. Have also had some inflammation of the cervix so trying to get an appointment to review the dosage and maybe try again 😕
