To stay home with an "irritable uterus" I had it in my other two pregnancies

This is my third and I've had no stop contractions all day I've had NO discharge no bleeding etc
But it happened a lot in my second pregnancy and the midwives and doctors were always blown away that I was not in labour
I don't feel like I'm in labour and I can feel the baby moving
I'm 26 weeks, they can't do a CTG yet can they?

I had this with my second and third pregnancies; it’s bloody awful isn’t it!
I ended up going in so many times with my second that by the end of the pregnancy (I went full term) I would just put my feet up and do nothing whenever they started. They ended up subsiding much quicker when I was well hydrated- the advice I had from a very strict, slightly scary, ward sister was to ‘drink as much water as you can, until the thought of drinking any more makes you sick- then you’re hydrated enough! And stop doing as much!’ (Second part is much harder with two children and no help, but still!)

sunflowerroses · 04/01/2022 13:15

I had this with both pregnancies and did have a CTG at around 28 weeks for the same reason with my first. Another CTG and steroids at around 34 weeks, but she stayed in until 38 weeks.

I didn't have any CTGs with my second as the feelings were very familiar and I was ok, but call day assessment unit as they're best placed to advise. It's horrible when it's so painful for so long, I have lots of sympathy.

This is the thing ladies it's like the unproductive contractions and the last thing I want is someone cranking open a speculum which already hurt when they tried to get it in 🥺 I've had two sections and I'm really tiny set so the speculum takes a lot to get in.

I don't know what is gained from testing because either I will go into labour or I won't but either way I can't control it. Didn't the last two times I can't see why I would this time..

I'm hydrated and sitting down now too but it is still happening. It's frustrating and tiring. Rest with two kids isn't easy. Ringing day care would 100% mean being told to come in for monitoring.. the school runs are just about to start so I don't particularly have time to come in to hospital, I could pop up to them Later. I guess using a Doppler to see the baby heart could be a safer start

Not sure what to do

I'd rather be safe than sorry.

A bit of inconvenience wins hands down over undiagnosed early labour.............. and I say this as someone who had horrendously complicated pregnancies.

MandUs · 04/01/2022 13:24

At 26 weeks I'd go and get checked out. If it is indeed early labour you want to get those steroids in to help baby's lungs. And you'd regret it if you did nothing because you assumed it was the irritable uterus again.

I'd be more relaxed about this further on in the pregnancy but at 26 weeks the baby would need all the help they can get should they be born now.

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 04/01/2022 13:38

Maybe give it until the morning and keep track of baby movements until then?
I would def get checked out if still feeling contractions tomorrow

sunflowerroses · 04/01/2022 13:43

I think I'd go in if they asked - better to know for sure. I had an internal scan to check cervix. Better to be safe.

handmademitlove · 04/01/2022 13:50

I went in from 27 weeks when it started to 35 weeks - at which point the midwives admitted I had been given the steroids just in case and baby was likely to be fine if they arrived at that point. Mine was complicated by the fact that I labour quickly so didn't want to give birth to a prem at home in case they needed support I couldn't give....

I would have a frank discussion with them and ask about steroids etc... then make your decision each time.

Crunchymum · 04/01/2022 14:03

Don't rely on a Doppler, they can sometimes give a false sense of security.

I too would call in and see what is recommended. I know it is a massive hassle etc but it really is not worth taking any chances.

cultkid · 04/01/2022 14:28

Sorry I meant they will use the Doppler, not sure what else they can do to check on the baby, to see if it is fine.

I had steroids in both previous pregnancies. Thanks ladies I'll give them a call when I've collected my children

@cultkid how are you today?

Hey, thank you so much for checking in on me, I think I'm at the beginning of a UTI again, even though the urine dip looked ok.
I'm going in to day care in about an hour for some checks because I feel so poorly. I'm having tightenings again today but didn't have them yesterday xx

Hi, midwife here - just to say that we do CTGs from 26 weeks. Can be tricky with lots of loss of contact, sometimes we have to sit and hold them on, but 26 weeks is when we start from Smile

CoalCraft · 06/01/2022 09:34

I feel like we had exact opposite experiences. I had irritable uterus with contractions all day, every day from about 20 weeks, but was repeatedly reassured by multiple midwives that it was normal and not to worry. Well, they turned into real labour at 33 weeks, so DD was prem. Can't help but think that they were a warning sign and the prem birth could have been avoided with medication.

I think the reason midwives weren't alarmed was because my contractions, though plainly visible and off the chart on the ctg, weren't painful, just uncomfortable But then they continued to be non-painful right up until an hour or so before DD actually emerged 🤷

Am early pregnant again now and of I have irritable uterus again I will insist on treatment.

sunflowerroses · 06/01/2022 14:04

Sorry you feel so unwell still, I'm glad you're being seen and hope it's all ok. Irritable uterus bad enough without a UTI.

aimsicles · 06/01/2022 16:46

I had 'irritable uterus' on my first and third. Spent 8 weeks in hospital on my first after my waters started leaking at 26 weeks.

On my third, an older midwife recommended taking magnesium supplements. I still had to rest and drink lots of water but I think the magnesium really helped.

cultkid · 06/01/2022 20:08

Hello ladies thank you for these updates, I had a positive partosure test today. The baby is not down low and I haven't had any blood loss etc
It's been the worst day of my life

Waiting for a scan on my cervix to check the length of it. The consultant in charge didn't think I was in labour or that I would be in labour tonight. I'll ask about magnesium. They are over run here today. I normally get amazing care but the hospital isn't itself

I'm traumatised by today

So sorry to see this update, sounds like a really horrible and worrying day. Are you being given steroids? I hope the scan shows cervix isn't shortening. Sending my thoughts to you.

Comtesse · 06/01/2022 23:29

Crap. I’m glad you were checked out ay least, probably better to know. Fingers crossed Flowers
