Am I being unreasonable to think that anyone who listened to Elizabeth Holmes's very deep voice when she did public speaking (or even whilst in her business operations) should surely have thought something was not right, well before any scandal?

It is so bizarre to listen to.

Having listened to DropOut since the summer, she made concerted effort to drop her voice so much. It was very noticeable to anyone who had known her before she took on this persona.
Yes, it was sad really... she was obsessed with Steve Jobs and wanted to be him Mark2.

But we have to remember here... she took millions of $ from a lot of people.

FFSFFSFFS · 04/01/2022 15:47

Female news readers ALL lower their voice…

I think it was just a thing she did to be listened to by men….

She is clearly a nutter though. I don’t have too much sympathy for a lot of her male investors though

PlanetNormal · 04/01/2022 15:47

@Ozanj

She got convicted because US courts don’t really consider domestic abuse / violence properly in trials against women. I would expect her to appeal as it seems it was her abusive ex-partner who was the one responsible for the finances. So any requests for wire fraud would have to have been instigated by him & there probably is a paper trail as he will soon be trialled too.
Holmes is a convicted fraudster who played the ‘coercive control’ card in a failed attempt to get off the hook.

I don’t believe her.

Jacaranda75 · 04/01/2022 15:56

There are videos on You Tube of her speaking in her normal voice. I am fascinated with this case and also read the hook when it came out.

I do wi set what will happen with her son? I imagine her parents will raise him. Very sad.

thepeopleversuswork · 04/01/2022 15:58

She did have voice training to make her voice sound deeper. As did Thatcher.

I have absolutely no problem with women having low voices but it is bizarre and very obviously synthetic.

Not putting Thatcher quite in the same boat as Elizabeth Holmes but based on this n of 2 its definitely an indicator that someone is ruthlessly ambitious. Grin

Theluggage15 · 04/01/2022 16:01

She literally lied about everything and caused a lot of harm giving people false results after they’d had her ‘blood tests’, losing peoples’ money, one man that worked for her committed suicide. For her to say she’s been abused and play the poor little woman card is absolutely par for the course for a pathological liar. The Sky documentary and podcast are excellent.

There were a number of people who knew it was rubbish but she had people like Kissenger, Clinton etc supporting her so no one listened to them.

Roussette · 04/01/2022 16:03

Yes, the Lab Director who committed suicide. That was appalling. He kept going to her saying it wasn't working. So she sacked him. He was distraught and took his own life.
His widow -understandably - is very bitter.

VanCleefArpels · 04/01/2022 16:03

@Theluggage15 the jury acquitted her of the charges in rejection to patients interestingly

Yep that was very shocking, the way that guy was treated.
JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 04/01/2022 16:09

@Roussette

Oh and... there's a film coming up. Jennifer Lawrence is playing Elizabeth Holmes.
I'll wait for that to understand what happened. Grin
BoredZelda · 04/01/2022 16:18

Her voice, dress and her demeanour was part of the schtick. If she had been more "blonde woman" it would have been much harder for her to defraud the investors.

I have little sympathy for her as she cheated a lot of people out of money and not all of them were very wealthy either. But, she was a part of the "fake it til you make it" culture of silicone valley, her only problem was that she didn't ever make it and she continued to lie about it. Plenty have done what she has done and got away with it because their pipe dream paid off.

I guarantee there are others doing the same as her at the moment.

BoredZelda · 04/01/2022 16:23

@JackieCollinshasnoauthority There's a documentary "Out for blood in silicone valley" available on Amazon. Up until the trial started it was free to prime members but unsurprisingly it is pay per view now.

BoredZelda · 04/01/2022 16:25

I think both of them were equally culpable, but I do think there was an element of control in the relationship.

VanCleefArpels · 04/01/2022 16:36

@BoredZelda it’s on Sky Documentaries too

BoredZelda · 04/01/2022 16:37

@VanCleefArpels

Not any more.

ChristmasPlanning · 04/01/2022 16:44

The Dropout is a great podcast

purplesequins · 04/01/2022 16:45

she can be a fraudster and victim of dv.

sonny clearly is a sleazy character and I wouldn't be surprised if he played her like a puppet.

VanCleefArpels · 04/01/2022 16:48

@BoredZelda it is

Elizabeth Holmes: Theranos founder convicted of fraud DEEP VOICE
tttigress · 04/01/2022 16:48

Forgot her voice, anyone who had a slight understanding of the topic should have realised she was fake. It is quite scary how little she was questioned.

I recon there must be a fair few fraud companies out there like this.

BoredZelda · 04/01/2022 16:50

@VanCleefArpels

I knew I had seen it there, and searched for it but couldn't find it. Still isn't coming up on my App.

TheWildHunt · 04/01/2022 17:19

trial which includes some great contributions from a tech investor that was offered a piece of Theranos but swerved - he talks about investor FOMO - people trying to get on the latest hot thing without doing proper due diligence. The investors that testified at trial came across as naive and certainly did not dig in beyond what EH was telling them

I saw a docoumenary and mainly remember a science graduate who went to work for her and whose GF was a big investor who went back to his family saying this is all bullshit - and getting ostracised and attacked by GF as how dare he critised this vunerable young genius woman.

I remember thinking nothing changes - rich old guy deceived by young pretty con woman who flatters his ego.

I did have more sympathy for an older woman investor on news recently- secretary who was being told by her boss and everyone around her with much more experience that this was next big things and to buy as much stock as possible. Saw similar story to a chef at start up company - his family cautioned against it and he wasn't sure wasn't technical but he did it - the start up was google and he was then set for life.

Not sure voice would have been a red flag to me though - not answering questions I do tend to notice so that might have and word salads.

Mochudubh · 04/01/2022 17:23

I didn't know anything about this till I saw the news but I thought her voice didn't fit. It's as though her face is on 45 but her voice on 33 (for those of us old enough to get the reference).

MarshmallowFondant · 04/01/2022 17:26

That'd be Tyler Schultz who worked there as a graduate and whistle-blew about what he saw going on. His grandfather was George Schultz, a former US secretary of state and large investor in Theranos. I think it caused a huge family rift.

forinborin · 04/01/2022 17:41

@Butchyrestingface

Am I alone in not thinking her voice sounds that bad? ¯\\(ツ)/¯
I know quite a few women who naturally speak / sing in that vocal register. I also don't think it is that atypical. She'd be a lyric contralto in operatic terms, I think.
TheWildHunt · 04/01/2022 17:49

MarshmallowFondant you're right - just googled there did seem to be some reconciliation near end though think GS was treated very badly like many whistle blowers sadly.
