Son cut his hair

Last night at 10pm when I thought my son was asleep he was actually giving himself a trim! He cut huge chunks out of the front of his hair and it was awful. Really uneven and nearly down the scalp in places..... the night before he goes back to school!! I had clippers from lockdown but all I could do was a buzz cut this morning and he quite honestly looks terrible!

Please tell me I'm not alone and your kids have done something like this before?!

My neice parted her fringe and cut half up to her scalp... She was about 4..

KenDodd · 04/01/2022 12:06

I think I win this!
My son gave another child a haircut at nursery.
He gave himself a haircut the day of school photos age 5
He has long hair now and refuses to cut it.

Yup. DD did it when she was 2. A huge chunk just behind her ear taken down to about 2 cm long at most. The worst thing for me was that she'd basically been bald up until that point anyway, so I was only just getting to make her look vaguely presentable rather than a half blown dandelion clock when she lopped half of it off. With some clever use of clips we disguised it for a month or two until it was long enough for it to be blended into an AA Milne style short bob, which actually looked adorable.
Lik a PP I was finding tufts of silky blonde curls shoved in the oddest places for weeks after and she tried to hide her misdeeds.

She's always been a bugger for scissors mind. Curtains, t shirts, nightgowns, teddies and dolls have all suffered at her hands and it doesn't matter how well I think I've hidden the scissors...

saraclara · 04/01/2022 12:08

I'm a school teacher and I've had kids do it there as well.

Me too. Thank goodness the parent was incredibly good about it. It was a really obvious chunk at the front, and I fully expected her parents to be furious with me, but they totally understood that it's impossible to be watching every child in the class at the same time. I could have hugged them.

Rangoon · 04/01/2022 12:14

Could be worse. A rather challenging boy in my class just went up to this girl and cut off one of her pigtails. I think we would have been about 10. The mother of the girl with half her hair cut off sent the hairdresser's bill to the parents of the boy with the scissors. And then there was the time when somebody used a magnifying glass and the sun's rays to set somebody's jersey smouldering - when they were wearing it.

Yes my dd was 5 when she decided to cut her own fringe the day before we went on holiday.
Had a lovely holiday and great memories but dd looks like this in every photo...

Oh my god Grin This is 100% something I'm now expecting my 3yo to do at nursery
CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 04/01/2022 12:58

Oh yes, my 5yo cut her own fringe. It's only hair, it grows back! She only did it once.

BendicksBittermints4Breakfast · 04/01/2022 13:01

@R0tational

Its fine. It will grow. Its a normal rite of passage for kids.
My daughter shaved a chunk out of her eyebrow when she was about 15, I can still see the spot today and she's 42, it never grew back properly!
teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/01/2022 13:05

My DD did this when she was about 6. She has long hair so I hadn't noticed until I found locks of it behind the tv! She's 8 now and still can't explain why she did it! When she was 2 I also tried to cut her fringe resulting in a disastrous jagged fringe she had to grow out!

Knittedfairies · 04/01/2022 13:05

@OhChrismtasTree - that was Tressy! 🎵🎶 'Tressy's got a secret, be the one who knows...' 🎶🎵etc etc

Don't worry OP: it will grow back

Iheartmysmart · 04/01/2022 13:18

I did it with my mum’s pinking shears so not only was my hair really short it was also zigzag. If that wasn’t enough, I also gave the neighbours Old English Sheepdog a haircut with the same scissors as he looked too hot. Was about 5 at the time.

DevonTF · 04/01/2022 13:21

Yep. Few years ago on a Saturday night. Both boys upstairs - youngest came down to show me his hair...then announced his older brother was upstairs doing his. I cried - It was awful. They has cut huge chunks out. Found a barbers open on a Sunday.

The poor hairdresser cried !!!! The youngest got away with a grade 3, but the oldest had to have a proper buzz cut. She cried because she thought it looked like he had cancer ! I took them to school the next day, and had to explain to their teachers.

Make sure you take photos - we did, and will use them at their 18th Birthdays / weddings etc.

GTAlogic · 04/01/2022 13:51

Yes, dc1 did his own hair at school one day. He used the safety scissors there to cut a massive chunk out of the front of his hair and cut it so close to his scalp that we had to give him a 0 grade shave.

One memorable Sunday night he drew all over his body, face, hands, legs, feet and neck with black felt-tip pen that wouldn't come off and had to go to school with the remnants of it still visible. He was 7 at the time.

I was 13 ish when I decided to cut my fringe. I cut it wonkily so tried to even it up but it was still wonky. I ended up with a 2cm fringe from ear to ear sticking out of the top of my head. I had to wear an Alice band for months to hide it until it grew out.

Santaisstilleatingmincepies · 04/01/2022 14:02

Just remembered I caught ds 2 hiding behind the curtains with dh's beard trimmer.. That was his first buzz cut..

Hankunamatata · 04/01/2022 14:06

One of my adult bridesmaids got drunk (and possibly other influences) and decided to shave her head. I wasnt fussed, mil was furious Grin

Chely · 04/01/2022 14:15

Yep. Worst was when son (5) cut daughters (4) hair taking huge chunks out. To make it look reasonable it was about an inch at it's longest, I was livid as we'd not long since been to have it trimmed at the hairdressers. It took over 2 years to get back to the same length. Had others give themselves a fringe, I did that as a kid too. Got to laugh about it.
