To be a bit freaked out by bird song at midnight?

I’m in bed but there is a very loud bird(s) singing away outside. It been happening the last few nights but in the 20 years we’ve lived in this house I’ve never heard it at this time of night.

It’s freaking me out a bit! What sort of birds would be twittering away at midnight and why have they turned up after 20 years. We’re not rural and they are at the front of the house so only a couple of smaller trees in peoples drives/gardens.

Sorry about the copy and paste fail.

Blackbirds and robins (some others too but these are the loudest and most common culprits) sing at night/dark early morning at this time of year. They congregate near streetlights now, whereas they would have found high points in sight of the moon previously. So the behaviour is not because of light pollution, but light has drawn them into residential areas making it more noticeable. They are known for it. You just haven't noticed before. It goes on til March.

They're just "testing, testing" their voices and demarcating territories before the mating season.

Yep. I am used to night sounds and there has been a noticeable increase compared to other comparable nights. We are fairly rural. Lower light pollution than most.

Light pollution causing biodiversity collapse. Went to a really interesting (and quite scary) talk on the subject a few weeks ago.

I once had a really eerie dream that an army of R2D2's had surrounded our house and were closing in to attack and as they were about ready to burst in through front and back doors, I woke up startled and realised it was the sound of blackbirds chirping away Grin
