To change my GP (Rio?) health records

Hello all,

NC as this is a bit outing.

I went to my GP today to discuss some medical issues that I'm currently experiencing. Anyhow, whilst the doctor's eyes were elsewhere, I managed to get a quick glimpse of my health records on her computer screen. There was a flag on the screen that I was a 'Victim of Domestic Violence'. I was flabbergasted. The incident happen many years ago (10 years ago) and I'm now happily married to a new partner and have a young child and my daughter (from my previous relationship).

I would like to get the 'flag' removed from the Rio (?) records. I do not want every GP, Doctor, hospital to know that I have experienced Domestic Violence. I am happy for it to remain in my records, but not to be flagged immediately when it opens up. I also found the term 'victim' quite degrading for many reasons.

When I saw the flag, it made sense as whilst I was pregnant with my DD, the doctor kept asking me some odd questions about DD and whether she was the father of my ex partner. I am aware safeguarding is important but I do not want my history to be flagged on screen. I also work for the NHS but our service does not use the RIO system. I am worried about my confidentiality.

AIBU to get this 'flag' removed? Anyone been through this and how can I get this sorted?

I don’t know how you do it but you are definitely not being unreasonable. I completely understand what your issue with it is. Hopefully someone will come along with advice but maybe you can start with a note to the practice manager and lead GP. If they refuse, I think NHS England is your next step for primary care complaints.

When I was 35 a 'flag' came up about an abortion I had when I was 17. I had never told DH about it and he was in the room with me. We met when I was 30.

At they very least they need to learn to be discreet about their screens.

It's fine to ask your GP practice to update their records.

Oh..I didn't know this was thing. Why a flag? And not just in your medical records as a procedure?Confused

Sorry op, do get onto the practice and start asking about it. Its your life and your file. Be confident in asking about it.

Kevinthesnipe · 03/01/2022 23:49

I don’t use Rio but on our system warnings need to be manually deleted or updated otherwise they sit there forever. Just let them know you don’t find it relevant now.

Littleducks · 03/01/2022 23:52

I don't know any GPs that use rio around here but we do and it has flags. These need to be manually 'expired' if no longer relevant. Not an issue to do so. I would just contact practice manager and ask

Bringinglightandpeace · 03/01/2022 23:55

Thank you everyone? So when is it technically expired?

It mentioned the injury (a bruise) and that I was a victim of domestic abuse .

It flashes up on the gps screen, no hiding from it.
Bringinglightandpeace · 04/01/2022 00:01

How can I ask this? Should I say that it is no longer relevant and that it's confidential?

Was you able to get this removed?

I've had a flag removed. I didn't actually realise I had one. The doctor knew me and said we've got this flag on our system and is it still relevant during an appointment. I said no and she said right that's been amended.

So I assume if you ask they can amend it there and then.

Blossomsbloom · 04/01/2022 02:29

You can just write to the practice manager asking for the flag to be removed as it is no longer relevant.
The entry will remain in your records but the alert/flag will be removed.
