I work in a dog walking area but in an antique type shop it’s big but cramped We have a no dogs rule purely because of all the breakable items. On a daily basis I get customers trying to bring dogs in. I get shouted at one woman told me we clearly hadn’t struggled during lock down and didn’t need there money. Someone else asks why we keep dog Bowles of water outside in summer if we don’t allow dogs it’s hot and dogs like a drink. Or they say we haven’t got a no dogs sign and then I point them politely to the big sign outside. One woman got told no then went in upstairs while I was serving a customer was hiding the dog under his coat. I also don’t make the rules I don’t own the business I just work there it’s not all dog owners but a selected few. We even often to watch the dog and hold outside it while the owner looks around.

Absolutely not unreasonable

I adore my little pooch but not everyone does! So I fully accept that there are places she cant go

DartmoorChef · 03/01/2022 19:57

Not at all unreasonable. My dog regularly sweeps everything off the coffee table when he wags his tail so I dread to imagine the damage he could do to an antique shop

Kookookachuu · 03/01/2022 19:57

I see dog bowls outside as a sign it’s a dog friendly shop so that may be causing some confusion. However, I completely understand why you do not allow dogs inside the shop and I don’t understand why these people have such a big problem with it.

Anordinarymum · 03/01/2022 19:59

They want to come in but don't want to leave their dog outside in case it gets pinched.
Their problem not yours

TheCanyon · 03/01/2022 20:02

Who in their right mind would think it's ok to take a dog in an antiques shop? I'd barely trust myself in one!!!

I couldn't tell you if any shops in our town are dog friendly as I've never even thought to take him in one, obviously except the vets.

Dodgyveneers · 03/01/2022 20:07

As long as you ban children too!

Dodgyveneers · 03/01/2022 20:10

I mean who cares? Really, this feels like a goady post. I doubt dogs cause damage or drama but it’s a good frothing post.

The one I used to work in was dog friendly!

I agree with a PP - the dog bowls outside are sending mixed messages. I'd suggest moving them to the manager / owner.

You've clearly not met a lot of dogs owner by idiots have you? Grin They cause plenty of damage, to property and people.
Dodgyveneers · 03/01/2022 20:15

@FreedomFaith no more than silly toddler owners. As I said, I think this is a goady post but lots falling for it 💤

Dodgyveneers · 03/01/2022 20:15

Dog haters come forth Grin

Laiste · 03/01/2022 20:17

I would suggest having an additional sign near the dog water. Something like:

Dogs welcome to have a drink but not allowed in the shop thankyou.
A member or staff would be happy to dog sit outside for you :)

RedWingBoots · 03/01/2022 20:17

I wouldn't go into an antiques shop with my toddler as I have another issues in other shops.
MiddleOfThePack · 03/01/2022 20:18

Dog bowl outside does not mean dogs can come inside - just that the owner doesn't want a dog to go thirsty which is very kind. No way I'd take mine in anywhere unless it explicitly said 'dogs allowed inside' (or similar).

MoreAloneTime · 03/01/2022 20:20

I wonder if having dog bowls outside is giving mixed messages to some people. It's not something I'd expect outside a typical shop.

Dodgyveneers · 03/01/2022 20:21

@RedWingBoots true, I am on the ukbusiness forum and the most complaints are about damage from children. I have just done an AS and it’s all about children. My nerves were on edge when mine were little.

Yerroblemom1923 · 03/01/2022 20:22

Eh? It's an antique shop with lots of precious, expensive breakables. What next will someone want to bring a bull in?!
Honestly! And those trying to equate dogs with toddlers..... you can tie a dog up outside. I'm wary enough of my own movements in antique shops, I certainly wouldn't be bringing an excitable, tail-wagging dog in with me!

Actually it’s about damage caused which equates to money. Statistics, you know.
Goldenbear · 03/01/2022 20:24

A child is a human - have a few more rights than a dog and you certainly can't leave them outside, oh and this forum is named 'Mumsnet'.

Keeps dogs from whining when they are tied up outside.

To be fair the only businesses I know do it at the moment are a bank, where dogs can come inside, and pubs with beer gardens, regardless of whether dogs are allowed inside.

echt · 03/01/2022 20:25

Maybe it's because I'm in Australia, but in suburban shopping areas, it's very common to see bowls of water for dogs set outside shops. It definitely does not mean dogs can go inside and everyone gets this.

I can only think of one shop that allows dogs in at all: Bunnings the DIY stores.

Dodgyveneers · 03/01/2022 20:25

The precious toddlers can cause damage but not dogs 🤣

Dodgyveneers · 03/01/2022 20:27

I run a business in southwold, we love dogs as do most other businesses here.

Dodgyveneers · 03/01/2022 20:28

And we have had no damage by dogs but probably about £350 plus caused by children.

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 03/01/2022 20:30

I'm always grateful for the bowls of water outside shops for dogs.
I really don't get it we never try and take our dog in to shops. When on holiday one of us stays outside with her. It's always a bonus when shops/pubs have a sign up saying dogs allowed but I would never presume its OK.
