Day drinking, AIBU?

It's afternoon where I am, and I'm halfway down a negroni I made in a haze of period pain Sad I have adenomyosis and suspected endometriosis. My American doctor won't refill my cocodamol prescription - I mean, fair enough it's their policy, but if I was addicted to codeine surely I wouldn't have brought nearly a whole box full of expired medication (from London two years ago) to the doctor's office when asking for some new ones for the worst day of my period every month? I tend to only need it one day, hence having so much left over that is now out of date.

Anyway, it feels really weird and unreasonable to be drinking in the day like this - even though pre pandemic we sometimes had brunch on Sundays where we'd have a negroni or Bloody Mary.

It is remarkably effective though! Realising I can no longer feel the horrific twisting sensation in my abdomen Grin

Do you ever day drink? AIBU? I used to enjoy a bit of Christmas Day champagne early in the morning, but we haven't done that the past few years, due to driving etc.

It is bank holiday! Nothing wrong with day drinking on a weekend or a holiday in my opinion. I wouldn't day drink on a week day though. Glad the pain has eased.

AbsentmindedWoman · 03/01/2022 19:46

I suppose it is a holiday, true!

The pain is under control now. I can actually breathe properly.

It's a bank holiday and you're not necking an entire bottle of gin. If it becomes your de facto way to deal with pain, you've got a problem. If you occasionally have one or two drinks when you've got terrible period pains and it's a weekend or bank hol, you're fine. Though I would say that level of pain isn't fair or right to live with and you deserve to have it taken seriously and dealt with by a medical professional.

PugInTheHouse · 03/01/2022 20:07

I'm not sure how 30% of people have said you're unreasonable to be honest! Definitely NBU, I have had a baileys in my coffee every day since 15th Dec! Nice chilled start to the day.

JustJam4Tea · 03/01/2022 20:09

I like a glass of wine with lunch on holiday. Rarely/never drink in the day just at home.

bestbeforedateexpired · 03/01/2022 20:17

It's still Christmas as far as I am concerned. I tested positive on my birthday so can't go anywhere. I bust a gut running around after guests for a week - I have actually lost weight. Today I opened a bottle of prosecco at lunch time and will finish it watching Only Connect. Fuck it.
Hope you get things sorted with your doctor.

AbsentmindedWoman · 03/01/2022 20:35

Thank you for your opinions. I can't even see the vote saying I'm 30% U - it just says no votes!

Feeling SO MUCH BETTER. I really need to get this sorted with a gynaecologist somehow this year, pandemic or no pandemic.

I don’t think that it’s so much the time of day which matters when it comes to drinking as it is why you’re drinking and the mood you’ve gone into it with. A celebratory drink for a joyful occasion like a wedding, or Christmas, or because you’re at a festival with all your friends can be absolutely fine at 10am. Drinking at 7pm because you’re bored or miserable or trying to fill a hole may be more socially acceptable in terms of the hour, but it indicates a more potentially troublesome relationship with drink.

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/01/2022 20:42

Drinking for pain relief isn’t the best, so glad you’re trying to get that sorted. But in the meantime, don’t beat yourself up about an occasional homemade cocktail on a bank holiday.

Oh my lovely, I completely sympathise! I had awful periods & stomach cramps that was literally paralyse me. Periods were not stop & so heavy, clothes would get ruined. When I got to 39 I had a long discussion with my gynaecologist & demanded a hysterectomy. They were reluctant but could see I meant business. I had the op on the 18th Dec 2013. The best Christmas present ever. Dr's got back to me in the new year & told me I had adenomyosis & would never of had kids anyhow. It didn't bother me because I was free of pain & worry that I would bleed in public. 💕

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/01/2022 21:20

I day drink every day when I'm on annual leave. Not getting pissed, but a cocktail or prosecco with lunch.

SparklingLime · 03/01/2022 21:26

You probably don’t need to worry about the expiry dates, for safety or efficacy:

Hope you’ve still got that box.

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 21:29

I used to hate day drinking. Feeling the hangover come on whilst stil awake 🤣

I dont drink a lot now but when we go on holidays I love a day drink ! Get slightly pissed by the pool on cocktails. Shower ,go for food and bed by 11

DartmoorChef · 03/01/2022 21:32

Can you take Tylenol? I found that very effective for period pain .

MerryChristmas21 · 03/01/2022 21:34

I'm sorry they haven't given you a prescription. if you still have the old ones, I'd take them, they're just going to be (if anything) slightly less effective they're not going to turn you purple iorbanything!

But on to the alcohol. Drinking in the day is fine (that doesn't turn you purple either!!)

When I was in my 20's (52 now) 'Champagne' Breakfasts were all the thing! (As well as Fri/Sat nights out and it was in the days of boozy pub lunches on Fridays and early finishes on Fridays back to the pub!)

I don't drink very much these days, but I drink when I want to, not dictated by the clock! (More dictated by having to drive a lot)

Hankunamatata · 03/01/2022 21:43

The old meds should still be effective - not with alcohol though. The likes of ibuprofen can be more effective for pain. Plus tens machines can be useful
