Probably an unpopular opinion, but I had 2 PON books for Christmas, and a lot of the recipes aren't great, and a lot are very basic!

Don't get me wrong there's some good ones but the diet cola Chinese chicken takes ages when there's much easier ways to make a tasty, healthy low fat Chinese, and tonight I made the ham and potato cakes as "an easy dinner" and they have basically been a massive faff and all fallen apart.

Gahhhh.

what @PattyPan says with an additional layer that aspartame which is used in some diet coke is not heat stable. Are you aware of safety data for the heat breakdown products, @00100001?

FriteFuaite · 04/01/2022 11:23

I love Two Chubby Cubs! I use their books a lot, I must say. I've just ordered the Slimming Eats book and that looks fab, too. I use the slimming eats site a lot so I'm hoping the new book is just as good.
I wasn't mad about PON, at all. Too much faff and not really as tasty as I'd expected for the effort.

Dixiechickonhols · 04/01/2022 11:47

Slimming foodie is great and less gimmicks than PON. Very tasty but easy family friendly food. I’m not a chubby cubs fan. I’ve been a bit put off Tom Kerridge since a mumsnetter said she saw him at a weightloss surgery appointment. His recipes are more time consuming too and need a lot of ingredients.

AnnaMarieQ · 04/01/2022 23:56

I was disappointed with PON books. I regularly use slimming eats recipes from their website. Has anyone bought the slimming eats book please? If so are there lots of recipes from the website included? It would be easier to have them all in one place

Dixiechickonhols · 05/01/2022 09:42

AnnaMarieQ There’s a favourites section which has dishes off her website and new recipes. She put a full list of all book recipes on her Facebook a few days ago.

No. Why would I be?

I was just saying that the sweetners provide the sweet taste.

AnnaMarieQ · 05/01/2022 16:06

@Dixiechickonhols

Ah thank you for that

winewolfhowls · 05/01/2022 17:07

Im just looking at the slimming eats website, it looks good and prior to the thread I had never heard of it. Thank you

Why anyone would buy a diet book written by two morbidly obese women is beyond me. One of them is so huge she can barely walk.

This. It's like "Take my advice, I'm not using it!"
Bluesheep8 · 05/01/2022 18:43

I bought one of the P.O.N books and gave it to a charity shop after trying a few recipes. They were all awful so I won't be buying another.

MarceyMc · 05/01/2022 20:42

I liked the Quick and Easy book and still make a fair few recipes from that one - I'm no cook so basic is fine for me. Got the most recent book for xmas and have to say it's pretty disappointing - some good suggestions to try on this thread tho!

Idontbelieveit14 · 05/01/2022 20:57

No I don’t use on principle as I got kicked out of the Facebook group a few years ago for some ridiculous reason 😂 did notice they were both big ladies (as am I!) recently though and wondered how they still manage to sell the books?!

Redact · 05/01/2022 21:35

I tried one recipe and no-one in the family enjoyed it. I don't feel inspired to buy the book.

SkyDragon · 05/01/2022 21:36

I quite liked PON until they took off the syns and stopped sharing their recipes online.

Slimming eats has some amazing recipes, as do Two Chubby Cubs

They had to, Slimming World asked them to remove them.
GrealishHairband · 05/01/2022 22:14

Two chubby Cubs for the win in our house, and they still share so much free content as well so you can try before you buy.

Piglet89 · 06/01/2022 08:26

I don’t even but recipe books any more; hours and hours and hours in front of the Food Network plus the internet and I get along just fine!

Sparkledust90 · 17/01/2022 06:15

The recipes are alright basic …. I’ve dropped weight with them :) but some advice from me get your gallbladder out hunny I reacted to even low fat food and water I got pancreatitis loads …ore hassle then they’re worth when it starts playing up its usually constant xxx

Cam2020 · 17/01/2022 06:31

I can't get past the 'nom' bit - bloody hate the stupid 'word'!

Sorry, not helpful Blush

Cam2020 · 17/01/2022 06:33

Didn't even realise this is, a diet book! The Tom Kerridge one is good.

Groovee · 17/01/2022 06:35

I agree. I wasn't too inspired. Then cheeseburger quiche was pinched from slimming eats, and Mongolian beef from two chubby Cubs. They would also see a good recipe on their Facebook page and delete the post and get rid of the member then tada creamy garlic chicken would be passed off as theirs. They lack taste in a lot of their recipes where as other places really flavour their food making the recipe lovely.

Also why do diet cook books when you clearly don't follow your own advice.

HappyDays40 · 17/01/2022 07:24

I just Google recipes, can't be arsed with recipe books.

MrsToothyBitch · 17/01/2022 14:16

Oh thank god, it's not just me then, I'm not cack handed, it is that their recipes never work!

I was given 2 books as well meaning gifts (from DP, who knew I was specifically looking for lowcal ideas and got these on recommendation from a couple of people at work to be helpful). I do get a bit of use out of them but it's the same few recipes on repeat and I make them with proper oil and full fat versions not artificial products. They taste better but this also means the meals in question are quite indulgent so they're treats only, really. Quite a lot of v unhealthy seeming recipes in the book actually.

I've tried 4 recipes (not many I actually fancy/that aren't v faffy tbh) and still make 3 of them... with hacks. Their fishcake recipe or "haddock and cream cheese mash" as it basically is here (the patties never stay as patties), their sausage plait using wraps not pastry (hit and miss and q bit effort but actually tasty and make nice packed lunch if we're travelling, might swap their sausage mix to actual pastry) and their cream cheese & mushrooms on ciabatta (I cba & use toast), which is the simplest and the only one that ever comes out flawless. I wondered wtf I was doing wrong as I'm not a bad cook. Really glad it's not just me.

Some good recommendations on this thread- will definitely try slimming foodie, hairy dieters (love them anyway) and get more Tom Kerridge - we just got the dopamine diet one. My offering is The Medicinal Chef by Dale Pinnock. Some lovely recipes in there, I use him to boost my veg intake and help "eat the rainbow!"

MrsToothyBitch · 17/01/2022 14:21

Should also add that I use the proper versions of food in their recipes as I just accepted early on that the few things I fancied were indulgent recipes anyway. I don't think low fat is always better, so I just looked else where for slimming / lower cal ideas and just enjoy these as occasional treats. They taste nice but too rich for all the time. I'm glad I got some use out of the book though, as it's a gift.
