To keep asking DH to turn the bloody TV down?

MiddleOfThePack · 01/01/2022 21:20

I'm hard of hearing, but the (adult) kids & I point out constantly that DH has the TV up far too loud. It's head rattling loud. Why? Does he think he's in the cinema all the time? When the kids go to bed they will shout down that they can hear all the dialogue from upstairs and can't sleep!

Any tips?

Subtitles. Game changer.

RamblingFar · 01/01/2022 21:55

Subtitles, but they aren't on all programmes and often unusable on live programs.

Ask him to watch it when everyone else is awake or out the house.

Mine has to be very very loud for me to be able to work out the speech. Consequently, I don't get to watch it much. I have to focus too much on the subtitles to relax much either. Wearing my hearing aids doesn't really help. They make it louder, but distort it too much.

But he isn't deaf? I am!

When did he last have a hearing test?

@MiddleOfThePack

But he isn't deaf? I am!
When was the last time he had a hearing test?
RockAndRollerskate · 01/01/2022 22:01

My DSis was deaf when we were children, I have perfect hearing but have always used subtitles. DH has become accustomed to them too

IncompleteSenten · 01/01/2022 22:09

Why does he say he has it so loud?

Can it connect to headphones that he could use instead?

CoffeeDay · 01/01/2022 22:26

YES!! YANBU. DH drives me nuts with the volume and I know for a fact he doesn't have hearing problems and he also has subtitles on. He just likes to have the TV 40% louder than it should be while scrolling through his phone. His friends often send stupid video clips over Whatsapp. Then instead of turning the TV the down a bit he cranks the volume on his phone up to maximum to watch those clips.

Bluetooth headphones are a godsend. I like to surf MN on my laptop whilst telling him I'm working. I'm at the dining table so he can't tell if I'm writing emails or typing replies to a I'm A Dog AMA. Then he has to put the headphones on Grin

Wireless headphones and tell him to book a hearing test

elelel · 01/01/2022 22:29

Any tips?

Why do you need tips? What does he say when you try to discuss it?

Darbs76 · 01/01/2022 22:31

Just tell him to keep it lower, or get him to take a hearing test

MamaWeasel · 01/01/2022 22:31

Just turn it down......?

MadeinSW3 · 01/01/2022 22:32

@CoffeeDay Grin so funny, mine does the phone clip thing too drives me MAD. I have to call him from upstairs to turn it down as he can’t hear me ( we are only in a small house).

Hellocatshome · 01/01/2022 22:33

Tell him to get a hearing test, work out a suitable volume number and ask him not to put it above that number, if he feels he cant hear it properly to use subtitles.

MiddleOfThePack · 01/01/2022 22:36

CoffeeDay: I thought he was the only one who did that! He'll be watching YouTube on his phone, the TV is on full blast & he'll be on the sofa in the kitchen (we use it as a kind of room divider) with his back to me asking me something. I end up shouting at the back of his head to listen to one or the other and talk to my face as I haven't a hope of hearing anything with all that racket.

He hasn't had a hearing test, but from observing him, there's nothing wrong with his hearing. My boys will come charging down to tell him to turn it down though.

MamaWeasel: I would but he falls asleep with the remote underneath him & snores (more noise!).

PinkSyCo · 01/01/2022 22:37

My tip is to tell him to stop being a selfish twat and keep the volume below 28 (for example) once people start going to bed.

DeeCeeCherry · 01/01/2022 22:39

I bet the neighbours cant stand him.

Why cant he wear wireless headphones? Its an easy solution. I bet he'd soon turn TV down then so as not to shatter his ear drums

MamaWeasel · 01/01/2022 22:44

Then either wake him up to ask for the remote, or turn the TV off at the plug. Who says he has sole custody of the remote anyway?

This issue would do my head in!

StoneofDestiny · 01/01/2022 23:29

He probably has a hearing problem. Listening to conversation and listening to the TV are too different things. Turning up the volume that high suggests a hearing problem

IncompleteSenten · 01/01/2022 23:29

If he's asleep then unplug the tv

AntiHop · 01/01/2022 23:31

I bet your neighbours can hear it too.
