Cleaning products for Christmas

Hope would you feel about getting a beautifully wrapped hamper of gifts, only to open them up to find toilet roll, wipes, laundry detergent, dishwasher tablets etc?

YABU - it's a great gift
YANBU - it's an awful gift and borderline offensive

Backstory: this is a thread about a Facebook post I've seen, where someone gave that to their friend who suffers from depression. The friend is offended by it, saying they feel it's a judgement on the condition of their house.

Or do you mean the person who wrapped up toilet roll and gave it to her friend who is struggling thought it was a lovely gift but the person receiving it was upset.

Yes, that one.

@PinkSyCo

To be honest the things you’ve listed are essentials rather than cleaning products so I would just think it was a really crap and boring gift. If the hamper contained things like bleach, windowlene, toilet cleaner, polish and dusters I would be offended though.
The things I mentioned are the things mentioned in the post, but she also said 'CLEANING MATERIALS' (in caps) so I'm guessing that other cleaning products were included.

I have to say the idea of wrapping toilet rolls for Christmas left me grin[ahock] I agree, it's a shit gift for an adult to give to another adult. Having said that, when I was about 5 years old, I vividly remember my gran gifting me a single novelty santa printed toilet roll wrapped up like a cracker. To my Mum's disappointment it was my favourite gift that year!

A friend and I exchanged house warming gifts when we bought our first homes that included cleaning products. However we did have an in joke that related to the Les Dawson Cissy and Ada sketch where one of them says " She's a stranger to Ajax".

onedayoranother · 01/01/2022 17:40

I love Ajax!
Anyway I'd be insulted. Cleaning products are essentials and I would not want them as a gift. That's just weird. And I'd definitely take it as a comment on how much I needed them as my house was obviously so messy and I didn't know what cleaning products I should be using so here you go!

DillDanding · 01/01/2022 18:12

I’d be really offended. I’d assume the person thought I was completely boring and the only thing they could think of for me was cleaning products.

Thankfully I don’t know anyone that would either buy this sort of thing or want it.

mugoftea456 · 01/01/2022 19:24

Depends on the person and how well you know them.

I love cleaning and my friends bought be a huge hamper of great products as a house warming present. I loved it, but I would imagine most people wouldn't !

FluffyBooBoo · 01/01/2022 23:03

I think as a housewarming present, it would be more acceptable. It's appropriate for the occasion. For Christmas though?

I'd be deeply offended and upset. I've had depression and struggled badly with keeping my home clean. I'd see a gift like that as a judgement of me.

Thelnebriati · 01/01/2022 23:30

Its an awful thing to do to someone who is depressed. If you really wanted to help them, wouldn't you offer to turn up with tea and biscuits and pitch in?

esloquehay · 01/01/2022 23:33

My Mother gave me a box of cleaning products for my 26/27 birthday. She was a cleaner, so had access to free products.
I distinctly remember crying after she left. I don't know why, but felt crushing disappointment and sadness.
I probably sound petulant and ungrateful, but I just couldn't get my head around why the fuck she was giving me cleaning bloody products. A nice card would have sufficed. 😬

gogohm · 01/01/2022 23:51

Depends, if it was all eco friendly stuff from a good friend into green issues I wouldn't find it odd, from family no just no - it would be a hint

RitaFires · 01/01/2022 23:52

I would definitely take it as a dig. I wouldn't mind it as a housewarming present but for Christmas it's definitely nasty. I have allergies and joint issues that mean I am very careful about what products I use so I wouldn't appreciate a supposed hamper of someone else's choice of cleaning supplies.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 02/01/2022 01:16

It's kinda similar to mouthwash and deodorant, so PA and super personal.

deadlanguage · 02/01/2022 01:58

Even if it’s for someone who likes cleaning, I think cleaning products are not a present!
