To think that New Year's resolutions begin on New Year's Day?

Not Jan 2nd?
My DH, who has declared his intent to lose weight this year, seems to be expecting some kind of slap up meal today. We're not having one. AIBU?

Not a chance, it’s a Saturday. They start on the first Monday of the year

coodawoodashooda · 01/01/2022 13:17

Yabu. Of course they don't.

Drunkpanda · 01/01/2022 13:21

Well mine's started today. But I would agree if there is a hangover or a traditional meal best set a date in the future

ComDummings · 01/01/2022 13:22

Never January 1st.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 01/01/2022 13:23

Starting a new year's resolution on 1st January usually means giving up on around 6th January.

Lifestyle changes don't have to start on aset date - 14th April is just as good (better as it's easier to stick to something once there are more hours of daylight and spring is starting...)

However there's no reason he should expect you to produce (yet another?) "slap up meal"! I assume that's actually the issue?

He can eat what he wants and get healthy starting on any date, but he can produce the special meal if he's the one wanting it, and if you've cooked for him a lot over the last two weeks he can offer to cook for everyone else this time.

I’ve said yabu because new yr habits start when you are ready to - we have too much food to finish up. BUT, if you don’t want to make a meal then YADNBU and he can make it if he wants one!

FlamesEmbersAshes · 01/01/2022 13:24

They can start whenever you want. I’ve always found mid January the best time personally.

KarlUrbansWife · 01/01/2022 13:24

Tuesday 4th for me, when I'm back at work. No way I'm missing out on MIL's legendary New Year's Day feast or putting a dampener on the remaining festivities Grin

Arabelladrinkstea · 01/01/2022 13:24

YABU - it never starts today, always the first Monday!

Lovemusic33 · 01/01/2022 13:25

I’m having one last unhealthy meal today 🤣, not a new year resolution as such as I won’t be depriving myself of unhealthy food all year but I will be reducing my intake and exercising more. I’m with your dh, it starts tomorrow…..or even Monday 😬

GoodnightGrandma · 01/01/2022 13:26

Of course !
It’s starts straight after midnight.

Exhausteddog · 01/01/2022 13:26

I was going to do dry January and be more focused on my running, but we've all got covid now so I'm putting that off til 10th January!🤣

SeasonFinale · 01/01/2022 13:26

I would say it is up to the person themselves when they want to start. Quite often the best day to start is first day back at work in the NY when normality kicks in.

Dizzyhedgehog · 01/01/2022 13:27

We still have leftovers to finish off, so I'll be back to making more balanced food once the leftovers are gone. I refuse to just bin them.
I did start back with exercise on 27th December...so, not quite January 1st.

I wouldn't do a "slap up meal", though. I've spent enough time cooking and there's enough stuff that can quickly be reheated and eaten in our house.

SparklingLime · 01/01/2022 13:27

Expecting? He can get in the kitchen then.

SickAndTiredAgain · 01/01/2022 13:27

Depends what they are I guess.

However, if he wants a meal that you don’t, I assume he knows where the kitchen is.

malificent7 · 01/01/2022 13:29

I'm easing my way into it ...fasting until this evening then finishing the Indian takeaway I ate at 10pm last night!

merryhouse · 01/01/2022 13:29

Well, if his resolution is "to lose weight" that doesn't actually preclude a slap-up meal on any day of the year, does it?

NavigatingAdolescence · 01/01/2022 13:30

DH’s birthday tomorrow. We don’t make resolutions but if we did they wouldn’t start till the 3rd!

ABitOfAShitShow · 01/01/2022 13:30

Not if you’re as hungover as I am. The 1st is a lost cause. The year - and associated resolutions - always begins on the 2nd. Grin

Ponoka7 · 01/01/2022 13:30

That's a lot of pressure to finish the Christmas food, chocolate, alcohol. I've always stared a fixed date around two weeks later. There's been years that I've gone by the lunar calendar, or the old NY which was the spring equinox.
The whole point is to make reasonable, achievable, some long, some short, goals.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/01/2022 13:30

Well surely HE can cook whatever meal he wants. You're not his mother. And you're not his private chef

BooksAndGin · 01/01/2022 13:31

YABU. They start on the first fresh week. Smile

UnsuitableHat · 01/01/2022 13:37

I’m starting a (hopefully) long dry patch on Jan 2nd. Jan 1st wouldn’t work for me.
