Do they just go off to landfill, are they biodegradable? Will they end up in some corner of the ocean?

Yep landfill alomg with all the stupid little plastic bags they give you to throw them away in, the swabs, the little bottles of solution etc will all eventually become microplastics in the sea.

FizzyTango · 01/01/2022 11:00

Landfill if they are in domestic waste. Or burned if they are put in clinical waste.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/01/2022 11:01

The amount of packaging with them is ridiculous. I know the swabs need to be kept sterile but there is no need for the small.plastic bags.

Mybalconyiscracking · 01/01/2022 11:02

Still, a LFT layer will be a god send for future archeologists if they want to time events.

ChateauMargaux · 01/01/2022 11:02

Landfill... along with all the single use masks.. shame these companies aren’t making a better solution like a colour changing solution that can be used with reusable or even smaller containers.

Mybalconyiscracking · 01/01/2022 11:03

The little plastic bags are very useful for colour sorting Hama beads.

I’m also keeping & using the bags.

Good for organising little things and also when selling small objects.

For my used swabs I first put it aside in case of a positive result, then on negative the swab is just put into the packet that the test was in & into the rubbish
I’ve kept quite a few of the tests themselves, snapping open the two pieces of plastic to use them as mini panels on some electronic gadgets - for buttons and LEDs.

BSJohnson · 01/01/2022 11:11

Are they not recyclable plastic if washed? (Assuming negative/no Covid germs to spread)?

Tommika · 01/01/2022 11:11

…. And for the vials I’ve kept quite a few to sit in gadgets as paintball game props.

My Council uses an incinerator for household rubbish. I do still cut the elastic on the blue facemasks after I saw a news article about marine wildlife getting caught in the straps.

jevoudrais · 01/01/2022 11:13

Plenty of councils now incinerate domestic waste, not as much goes to landfill these days.

Still results in microplastics though I think.
