.. to make pupcakes? (Cakes for dogs!) it’s store bought in a jar but it does say use within 4-6 weeks! I’m not entirely sure how long it’s been open but I think a while!! It looks and smells fine? Thanks!!

As long as it smells fine I wouldn’t see why not.

KiloWhat · 01/01/2022 09:31

I wouldn't all that sugar content is a breeding ground for nasties

PuntasticUsername · 01/01/2022 09:53

No - high sugar content inhibits the growth of harmful organisms. That's why jam and marmalade keep for ages on the shelf (assuming they're prepared hygienically).

Ooh does it!

Ignore me then.

What does sugar bread? Yeast? Anything?

Mumdiva99 · 01/01/2022 09:54

Taste it and if not fizzy it will be fine. However, surely the dogs don't need flavoured cakes?? Or will you use it instead of sugar.....

I thought sugar was a preservative, hence jam, marmalade etc... being used to preserve fruit.

but is that the same once the air gets to it? Otherwise why would they tell you to throw it away.

Frannibananni · 01/01/2022 10:00

No! Not if it’s just normal apple sauce. Apple sauce doesn’t have enough sugar to act as a preservative.

PuntasticUsername · 01/01/2022 10:06

"What does sugar bread? Yeast? Anything?"

I just googled it, because I suddenly doubted myself! It seems microbes happily feed on a little sugar, but if the concentration is too high they can't respire or reproduce. I learned that too much sugar in your gut can inhibit the correct functioning of your friendly bacteria jobbies. I had no idea that that was one of the reasons not to eat too much sugar, but it makes sense I guess.

Ps I have no information about the amount of sugar commonly found in apple sauce, so I don't actually know which of us is right in this case. I was just talking about sugar content generally.

PomegranateSeed · 01/01/2022 10:42

I wouldn’t. I use it quite a lot because it’s Odonata ingredient in Vegan recipes and I can’t always be bothered to make it from scratch. It does go moldy as does jam, although jam does take a long time. If you have apples just chop them up and cook them instead.

PomegranateSeed · 01/01/2022 10:43

Often

KiloWhat · 01/01/2022 10:47

@PuntasticUsername aw thank you! Yeah that makes sense about the gut thing!
