to never 'get' new year?

NewUser2022 · 01/01/2022 09:27

I just hate all the nonsense around it.
Nothing really changes when the clock moves 1 second past midnight.
But all the hype of it being a 'new year' as if it's some kind of mega-shift in people's lives.
I've never celebrated it, find it a huge waste of time (and sleep!) and genuinely don't understand why anyone thinks today is any different to yesterday other than it's a new month and we have to remember to put 2022 on stuff.

It’s to try and bring fun to life! Reflect what you’ve done in the previous year and be proud of where you’ve grown and what we’ve all achieved. Then you can feel positive about a fresh start and make any changes you need to.

It’s what you make of it. You only have one life so do what makes it fun.

Elodeastar · 01/01/2022 10:09

I think we all have different feelings about New Year, and that's OK - if it doesn't mean much to you then that's fine, if it means more to someone else that's fine too. I personally have things to look forward to in January, so am looking forward to a new month, but I am not making a song and dance about changing my life etc. For some folk NY is a catalyst, and that's fine, as long as expectations are realistic and do-able!

MsTSwift · 01/01/2022 10:13

Totally agree that humans need these festivals - we always have for thousands of years in every culture ! Totally agree with hive imagine November - March with just nothing but workaday. Hideous. Personally find February/ March the worst months like the fresh start feel of January.

dementedma · 01/01/2022 10:13

The worst thing about it is here in Scotland people feel obliged to wish you a happy new year the first time they see you that year....so are still saying it weeks after the event! Its bloody never ending.

GaolBhoAlba · 01/01/2022 10:22

Im generally indifferent to it - its usually the time when I hit a wee lull of post xmas blues. I feel really quite unmotivated today though, more so than normal, and wholly down to the knowledge we're moving into the third year of restricted (im refusing to use the 'protected' euphemism) living 😔 I just really want this over, im desperately hoping this wave is covid's swansong.

Newyearoldyou · 01/01/2022 10:23

I don't think bar one time I've ever had a good time on new years eve.

However I do think it's important to make the end of the year eve even if don't celebrate.

Newyearoldyou · 01/01/2022 10:24

Gaol.

That is a sobering thought!! However it really can't go on much longer I'm sure by March we will be putting it behind us.

I don't mind folk wishing me a 'Happy New Year', it's a nice enough greeting, though tbh most folk I know don't take it past the middle of January really!
gogohm · 01/01/2022 10:26

Whatever. As far as concerned the more excuses to celebrate the better

MissCrowley · 01/01/2022 10:27

I like it, I set new goals for my business and myself. It's a fresh shiny new year full of opportunities and hope after what's been a pretty shit 2 years.
Happy New Year everyone!

I really hope so. Thank you.
strugglingwithlife · 01/01/2022 10:34

I completely agree OP, I detest new year and January

ShowOfHands · 01/01/2022 10:40

NYE is my birthday so I probably appreciate it as a marker more than most but I do see it as the bookend to the festive period. Today I'll start clearing the garden, perusing the garden centre offerings, looking forward again instead of celebrating midwinter. It's a nice moment, a subtle shift.

I suspect you do get it, you just don't want to join in. That's fine. Many people don't.

Giggorata · 01/01/2022 10:41

I never really got New Year until I saw this, from Nathan Pyle's Strange Planet:
Happy New Year, vipers!

to never 'get' new year?
Thickasmincepie · 01/01/2022 10:46

I think it's cos nothing actually changes on nyd whereas back to school in September is always a big mental shift, with new routines etc.

bumblingbovine49 · 01/01/2022 10:51

What is there to get? It is an arbitrary point in the calendar that has been chosen as a way to mark the passing of time with a ritual . Rituals have been a way of marking events with meaning since humans have been around. Many rituals are practiced with other people and give meaning to events. If you think those rituals don't have meaning for you then ignore them .

I quite like New Year as a way to reflect on a year gone and one to come , I find it a bit sad as well as hopeful but that is ok. I also like how it feels like I am connected to others as so many people will be thinking about New Year and marking the turn of another year at the same time I am.

Birthdays of course can serve a similar purpose but they don't have that feeling of being connected to so many others doing the same thing at the same time

JohnStonesMissus · 01/01/2022 10:53

I get you OP, I have FB friends who say they're glad to see the back of 2021 but the thing is they've been saying the same bloody thing every New Years Eve since 2016! It's almost as if the 'year' is responsible for the rubbish things that happen in life and the new one is going to be totally stress free and brilliant but we know life isn't like that and so they'll post exactly the same thing at the end of this year, but as others have said I do see New Year's Eve as a finale of the festive period.

bumblingbovine49 · 01/01/2022 10:55

Love this . It says what I was trying to say so much better and much more succinctlyGrin

Could not agree more!!!
MerryChristmas21 · 01/01/2022 11:24

...and?

felulageller · 01/01/2022 16:44

Well it's celebrating that this lump of rock which feeds us all has gone round that big ball which gives us all life again.

Life and existence, nothing much worth celebrating!!

Chishnfips · 01/01/2022 17:19

The midnight party is not really my thing but I'll usually make an effort to get up early for the sunrise on the 1st and set some new intentions for the year ahead.

rrhuth · 01/01/2022 17:21

I don't do NYE but I love Nee Year's Day, it is another day to enjoy and mark as special.

GoodnightGrandma · 01/01/2022 17:22

I agree.
I was in my bed at 10 pm reading my book, living the life !

Holothane · 01/01/2022 17:23

I’m normally the same opinion but this year my life is going to change and I bloody mean it.
