Please stop my DH from snoring

It's so loud. It's like sleeping next to an intermittent chainsaw.

What's out there (besides smothering him with a pillow) that can actually works? I've tried white noise, ear plugs for me. Nasal strips for him.

I'm shocked the neighbors haven't complained. He is LOUD!!

House isn't big enough to kick him into another room and he's too big to sleep on our small sofa.

Help.

Thoroughly clearing the nasal passages before getting into bed may help. Blow down one nostril with the other closed, repeat down the other nostril.

dementedpixie · 01/01/2022 00:26

Get him to get tested for sleep apnoea. A cpap machine has sorted out dhs snoring problem

Confrontayshunme · 01/01/2022 00:28

Losing weight (particularly around the abdomen, neck and chest), clearing his nose if he has sinus issues, no alcohol. There are ways to reduce it, but they all seem to think it entirely unpreventable. My DH was horrible when we first married but lost 3 stone with good diet and exercise after a doctor said it would help, and he stopped. It is now entirely connected to how much beer he drinks (it relaxes the vocal cords and pharynx) so if he wants beer, the 2 meter chainsaw gets the sofa.

CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 01/01/2022 00:29

Get him to go to the gp, there are so many medical reasons for snoring and many can be treated.

Dancingsmile · 01/01/2022 00:29

You mentioned he's too big to sleep on the sofa. Is he overweight ?
My husband stopped snoring when he lost weight and wasn't overweight anymore.
Also, he may have sleep apneoa, worth a trip to the GP.

AnyoneForFondue · 01/01/2022 00:29

Losing weight was a big one for us, there was a huge difference. Also, sleeping on side rather than back.

MargaretThursday · 01/01/2022 00:31

Finger hard in the ribs repeated each time he snores is my recommendation.

Happinessislife · 01/01/2022 00:51

I snore ... and my DH can't cope. Weight loss does help but the thing that works best for me is a somowell mouth guard. There's a few types and they take a bit of getting used to.

Merryoldgoat · 01/01/2022 00:53

Weight loss and a CPAP machine.

MissMogwai · 01/01/2022 01:04

CPAP machine is a god send. My husband snored for years and it was absolutely horrendous, especially if he'd had a drink.

When it was really bad He'd sort of stop breathing and then do a giant loud snort. Awful and obviously not healthy.
The machine took some getting used to but it's very quiet and the difference is amazing.

Glowmaintenance · 01/01/2022 01:09

A mouth guard is the only thing that worked for DH. DH got his on amazon and he moulds it to fit his teeth. It holds the jaw slightly forward and stops him snoring completely. It took him a while to get used to wearing it but can't sleep without it now.

Phrenologistsfinger · 01/01/2022 01:26

Exorcism!

lonelylou09 · 01/01/2022 01:33

I feel your pain. We actually were trying to move house so we could have a spare bedroom for when the snoring gets so bad.
I'm actually really hard of hearing and have to wear hearing aids during the day but my O.H snoring will regularly either keep me awake or wake me in the night.
Only thing I can say that worked was him losing weight. I bought him a fortune worth of sprays, tablets, special pillows ect..nothing worked. Ear plugs help me a little but I don't like using them as I wear hearing aids all day.
Looking forward to new year dieting as hopefully it will lessen the noise 🤣🤣

MarineBlue33 · 01/01/2022 01:34

Can you turn him over to his side / nudge him in thar direction?

Turnitupto11 · 01/01/2022 01:35

My ex used to snore all the time, he was overweight, went in a low carb diet and within a week had stopped snoring, before he even lost much weight. I read it's too do with carbs causing mucus build up in the airways, not sure though.

mrsmacmc · 01/01/2022 01:36

Agree with what PP have suggested. I've got a 6ft chainsaw currently snorting like a walrus next to me 🤦‍♀️ encourage your chainsaw to side sleep but please investigate sleep apnea too 💐

soapboxqueen · 01/01/2022 01:49

Agree with pp about sleep apnea.

Dh was horrendous and doubly so when he'd been drinking. Had been since a teenager.

Sent him to the GP after I noticed his breathing would pause weirdly. They tested him and gave him a cpap machine.

Bloody miracle.

I find the noise of the machine quite soothing 🤣

mrsbyers · 01/01/2022 01:50

Separate rooms ! My husband snores terribly he had his tonsils and ‘flappy bits’ at back of his nose to try and sort but did no good so now we have separate rooms and I still wear industrial earplugs - I dread if we have to share a room now

GiveOverIrene · 01/01/2022 01:52

You have my sympathy. The only thing that works for us is separate bedrooms! In your position try to get him to sleep on his side.

When we stay in a hotel and have to share a room, I use earplugs combined with headphones that I play ambient sounds through. It's quite uncomfortable, and earplugs make my ears itch, so not a long term solution.

RampantIvy · 01/01/2022 01:56

He needs to see his GO to rule out sleep apnoea.
