AIBU to send my DH to boarding school?

DH is nearly old enough. I think he’ll be able to cope. He is so enamoured by the prospect of sending our kids - I’m hoping that it makes the most sense. Then they can stay with me. Apparently he can come home on a Saturday night.

In my mind it will be like the classic, and underrated ITV production 'ladette to lady' with clueless husbands of mumsnetters.

@31godmum56 I have a habit of drunk ordering so best not. Tbh late Mr willstarttomorrow was the result of too much vino and whilst much missed, had room for improvement Grin

I had two friends who went to boarding school in their teens, they were funded through the freemasons as both had lost their fathers. For one of them in particular it gave her the space to cope with her mother being involved in a pretty toxic new relationship. They were a perfect age and I'm sure that's the key to a successful boarding experience.

I'd love to go to Malory Towers (for the reliably warm weather in summer, the ocean pool and the midnight feasts).

Ohyesiam · 01/01/2022 00:08

Look at how the tortures behave. A desperate need for power yet unable to control themselves. Could we trace it all back to boarding school induced trauma?

BluebellsGreenbells · 01/01/2022 00:10

Ohh lovely.

I wonder what classes they’ll attend? Do you have a prospectus?

Folding clothes.
Loading the dishwasher?

Gremlinsateit · 01/01/2022 00:12

Fantastic idea OP! Boarding school would teach H to be a team player and rub off those rough edges. And if he’s having too much fun with his friends to want to come home after Saturday sport, then so be it Wink

ColourMeExhausted · 01/01/2022 00:41

DH is very anti boarding school (my DB went at 7, it has messed him up for life). Wouldn't mind a term at Mallory Towers for me though, summer preferably, so I can enjoy that outdoor pool.

Nocutenamesleft · 01/01/2022 00:46

I have to say

I went to boarding school end I truly loved it. I adore being away from home. My mother was amazing. But the family you get at school. Is something else. I didn’t do it for long though.

Mine is late too and much missed. He was such a handful that I could see him being asked not to return after 1 term.

My DH weekly commutes.

Advantages...

  • no longer tripping over Army boots everywhere
  • free choice on evening TV
  • one less person to juggle meal preferences of
  • more bed
  • less snoring
  • he does his own washing at work

Disadvantages

  • unequal parenting
  • I have to take the bins out

(Can I have a few terms at Chalet School please?)

Wilkolampshade · 01/01/2022 09:56

@Exasperatedhousehunter OP is suggesting her DH go.. not her DC. Its a light-hearted thread....

LowlandLucky · 01/01/2022 10:12

Boarding kennels would be a better option.

Undertheoldlindentree · 01/01/2022 10:27

Fees can be quite steep OP. Has he any talents that might qualify for a scholarship?

FindingMeno · 01/01/2022 11:00

I might actually enquire if any prisons have a spare bed for dh.
Same result for me, but no fees to find.

That is one of the vanishingly small situations where Boarding school is better than being at home with your family. I was a Day pupil at Boarding school and amongst all the Boarders I knew I think there was 1 who was there for unavoidable reasons. The ones who had asked to go generally didn’t like their home/parents very much and were looking for escape.

If DH isn’t asking to go OP then it sounds like you have been a good wife so far - but no matter, I’m sure it will be the making of him.

The number of times I dreamed of solitary confinement during the baby & toddler years. For me, not him.
MzHz · 01/01/2022 11:35

Will the discipline be very harsh?…. 🙃

MzHz · 01/01/2022 11:36

Is there a waiting list for husbands?

FindingMeno · 01/01/2022 11:36

@MzHz would be with my plan.

Seedandyarn · 01/01/2022 11:40

My DH would probably sob and beg for mercy.... but then he went to boarding school as a child.

ViceLikeBlip · 01/01/2022 11:48

It seems like there's quite a demand for husband boarding, but good luck getting anyone to staff it (I work at a boarding school, and whilst I can cope with the teenagers no problem at all, there is no chance I would take on a whole house full of middle aged men!! Tbf though, Matron would probably sort them out pretty sharpish)

QueeniesCroft · 01/01/2022 12:14

@willstarttomorrow

I am now re-thinking Malory Towers, 2022 version and I think this could have legs. Sorry do not have a DH to contribute.
Fret not, you can have mine!
YetAnotherSpartacus · 01/01/2022 12:18

I'm imagining them all in the infirmary in their dressing gowns of doom.

Camomila · 01/01/2022 12:20

I'd love to go to boarding school if it could be Hogwarts or the Chalet school.

StrongSunglasses · 01/01/2022 12:23

I went to boarding school at 14 and absolutely loved it - very happy and fun times.
