Do you buy second hand clothes for your children and AIBU to ask why and how you feel about it?

I try to buy as much as I can second hand I have saved so much money doing it. I never buy shoes though as I think they wear quicker? I use eBay, market place, sweet pea and Lovely Little Preloved on face book. I love a JoJo clothes and get some really nice second hand bits for a fraction of the new cost.

Also toys I tend to pick up in charity shops or to swaps with friends, I hate the thought of so much plastic being around it makes sense to buy second hand

lightisnotwhite · 31/12/2021 19:49

I don’t even buy the clothes. Tons of baby stuff donated to me. Hand me downs and pass alongs for the rest.
I’m lucky to live in a wealthy town. No shortage of good quality, good label clothes here.

sayanythingelse · 31/12/2021 19:49

Yes, DD dresses better than me. The majority of her clothing is good quality items from charity shops and some designer pieces I've found.

Unfortunately, we have an aged population in my town, so the adult clothing is all very old lady. That or tatty Primark tops.

CalmDownBoris72 · 31/12/2021 19:49

I do for environmental reasons Plus I can afford much better quality clothes that way.

I do the same for myself too but even more for my younger children as they grow so quickly.

NettleTea · 31/12/2021 19:51

absolutely. used to buy out of season and sell at beginning of correct season for all the kids clothes - get decent makes and they last and still have a great resell price - that way you only pay out for one lot of clothes per child until they get to a point where they want to buy their own clothes!

as others said, Ive done the same for other stuff too - furniture, cars, cookware, just about anything. Always look for secondhand first. And I feel great about it

Yes my kids grow like theres no tomorrow (dad over 6 foot).
It means they get better quality ( next gap, h and m, m and s) that I would be able to afford.
Also dislike the waste from an environmental perspective so after mine are done with them there sold on / given away.
I also buy alot of second hand stuff for myself and the house. My solid oak furniture table with 6 chairs was 50 quid off marketplace the oak furniture land equivalent was about 1500.

I buy secondhand clothes for my DC and have done since DC1 was a baby and I wanted to pick up a bundle of mud-coloured clothes for nursery.
That was 17 years ago, back when eBay listings didn't all have photos and payment was sent by cheque or postal order. Aged 11 and under, most of the DCs' clothing was secondhand or hand-me-downs, supplemented by gift items and things bought in the sales. As they've got older, it's been harder to buy things like jeans and t-shirts secondhand as they just don't come up for sale as frequently as the smaller sizes. DC1 buys a lot of their own stuff on eBay and Depop but also sells things using those platforms too.

Buying good quality, secondhand items is just how we do things in our family whether that's clothing, furniture, an Eglu or musical instruments. We will buy new if the thing we need isn't available secondhand at a sensible price but regularly choose to buy better quality secondhand than brand new of a lesser quality.

WonderfulYou · 31/12/2021 20:02

I used to all of the time as she’d grow so fast and I wouldn’t worry about it getting ruined.

But as she’s gotten older she like to pick her own clothes out so I’ve not done it for a while.

onlyhereforthefood · 31/12/2021 20:03

Yes, she's growing so fast and the vinted app has some great bargains!

WalkingOnSonshine · 31/12/2021 20:03

I also use a toy subscription for his toys - again, don’t see the point of the waste buying new, and it means they aren’t hanging round if he gets bored or too big for them.

I just swap them for new toys.

Cuwins · 31/12/2021 20:04

I'm expecting my first child currently and have brought quite a few things (clothes and toys) 2nd hand. The local freebay group I'm part of has lots of good kids clothes always being posted and the local selling group as well (but they are not free!) so I'm sure I will continue to pick her clothes up from there.
For myself I rarely by 2nd hand, not because I have an issue with it- I would like to but I rarely find clothes I like. Im very fussy about jeans which are generally what I wear and need a petite length that I don't find very often 2nd hand. Then I live in t-shirts and hoodies which again I'm fussy about but actually it's the cheap stuff I like so it's often cheaper to buy it new.

Newyearnewme2022 · 31/12/2021 20:06

No, always new and the best quality I can afford for ds, I buy second hand for me though and have done for years.

liveforsummer · 31/12/2021 20:09

Yes, all the time. Nice quality stuff for the price of primark. Branded trainers cheaper than Asda's own. Specialist hobby gear for a fraction of the price how do I feel? Happy I've had a bargain!

liveforsummer · 31/12/2021 20:11
@Tibtab yeah. I don't really have time to scour Facebook for good deals on kids clothes, go and collect them, to then have to sift through them and have my kids decide they don't like the other half too. I just order from next with the dc and have it delivered. Sorted 👍
Type 'next' in to eBay and you'll have loads of options with a similar choice and scroll time as the next website

Fredstheteds · 31/12/2021 20:11

All the time had wonderful bargains from next, frugi, joules, Clarks ( normally brand new), John Lewis, jo jo etc, rarely buy supermarket clothes 2nd hand. Great sales shopper too

stargirl1701 · 31/12/2021 20:12

Yes, as much as possible. Mostly eBay.

Vampirethriller · 31/12/2021 20:14

All my daughter's clothes and mine are at least second hand, because I can't afford new. There's some very cheap charity shops where I live. Anything she grows out of that's still decent goes back to them.

MogsBestestFurball · 31/12/2021 20:15

No, don't have time, but would love to.

Really miss NCT sales for this reason, will they ever start again?

dashoflime · 31/12/2021 20:17

I don't. Primark is about the same price and much less hassle.

Disneyblueeyes · 31/12/2021 20:18

Yes all the time.
Bit surprised by people not buying 2nd hand shoes. Why not? Most of my little girl's shoes have been second hand.

Cuwins · 31/12/2021 20:21

@Disneyblueeyes

Yes all the time. Bit surprised by people not buying 2nd hand shoes. Why not? Most of my little girl's shoes have been second hand.
I think I would buy kids shoes 2nd hand as long as they were comfortable in them. However not my own as I have huge trouble finding shoes that are comfortable so takes alot of trying on in shops to find any I get on with. When I find a pair I buy multiples of the same thing which I couldn't do in a charity shop.
Idontbelieveit14 · 31/12/2021 20:21

Yes but only if in excellent condition.

TheChild · 31/12/2021 20:23

Yes, because I don't have a lot of money so a charity shop bargain is always welcome for me. I can spend less and get better quality items thab if I bought the cheapest new clothing I could afford.
