AIBU or am I just losing the plot?

I have had parents staying now for 2 weeks. First mine, and now DH's.
I find MIL very difficult at the best of times, and now she's driving me mad.
Want to check here first to see if I need to calm down, or if MIL is being annoying….
MIL likes to "help". But she has a special skill of making things worse when she "helps". At the best of times I feel she takes over my house.

She's just gone in the kitchen and turned the radio station over. It was on Radio 2. She's turned it over to jazz music.

This has really annoyed me. AIBU? or do I just need to chill out?

See, I would have told Alexa to put it back to radio 2!

Your house, your Alexa.

I wouldn’t allow the “helping” if it isn’t helping. There are ways to decline politely. I couldn’t stand someone taking over my house!
Surely the visits need to be shorter. 2 weeks of parents/in-laws staying is madness! It’s meant to be a holiday time for you too, not a prolonged spell of looking after other people.

Only a selfish twat of a husband would call you horrible for being exhausted from having 2 weeks of guests, particularly as he isn't around much.

OP, have you anywhere to go?
Any friend to visit?

I would go quite mad at 2 weeks of guests.

I think your MIL is very rude to change the radio station.

You need to absent yourself from the house and take a hard look at who you are married to.

It would be a brave man that would call me horrible and his mother staying for a week.

I feel for you. I couldn't stand being a guest or a host for 2 weeks. I'm fed up of being in my own house over Christmas with my husband and children!
Turning the radio over is just really bad manners, so that would quietly annoy me. After hosting for a week already I think it would simmer over into outrage.
Your husband hasn't got a leg to stand on. Would he be happy to host your mum while you were out at work for ten days?

JohnSmithDrive · 31/12/2021 19:15

I wouldn't expect to have control of the radio or TV while I had guests, their preference comes first

2 weeks is far too long to have visitors though.

FinallyHere · 31/12/2021 19:30

And your husband doesn't get the final day if he is not around to host.

Why can't he take time off to enjoy his mother's company.

Datsandcogs · 31/12/2021 19:36

You are a saint for having anyone for 10 days! She was being rude changing the radio over without asking, but she probably did it without realising.

I understand this is an exceptional year but your DH is being unreasonable to have her over for so long but then have the escape route of working and leaving her to you! You need different arrangements for next year, personally 3 nights is enough for me unless they really muck in and help out.

Lindy2 · 31/12/2021 19:51

We have a rule here that the maximum stay for guests is 2 days.

2 weeks would absolutely break me, even if it was my own mum who I enjoy the company of.

You need to let people know staying for a week or more doesn't really work for you because of your other commitments (no need to specify the commitments) but they are welcome for 2 or 3 nights. Your DH also needs to be there the whole time.

houselikeashed · 31/12/2021 21:07

To be fair, DH has to work. That's not the issue.
I will be putting my foot down next year. Max 1 week of guests, split between mine and his parents.
God, I've clearly had enough. Everything is annoying me.

I need my house back.

I get the rage when DH uses my car and changes the radio to cricket or some talking heads channel, so I feel your pain.

Soon be over though.
