To plead for an alternative to the obvious child YouTube stars?

M1526 · 31/12/2021 10:41

My 2 year old has developed a liking for children in YouTube channels - we made the mistake of putting on a make a pizza video by Gabby & Alex, then all these suggestions came up for other children pushing really strong messages that I'm not 100% wanting DC to mimic.. can't currently figure out how to wipe it from the TV YouTube interface, but will fix today... not keen on constantly opening toys, fast fashion, plastic tat tots & huge obvious Branding for product placements, etc.

Is there an example of a real life video series or channel on YouTube where it's a bit more of a wholesome message (i.e. not every episode about branded sweets or opening new toys)?

I've looked at examples of you tube stars but it's fairly heavily skewed towards USA (and accents as a result) if in English.

Why do you want your 2 year old to watch YouTube?

Camperbann · 31/12/2021 10:44

They're 2, plenty of programmes geared towards that age group available across many platforms, why not just delete the YouTube app.

M1526 · 31/12/2021 10:44

(not trying to offend anyone here I'm just hoping there's stuff I haven't found. But it needs to be real life child as cartoons seem to be boring now apparentlyHmm)

Stop letting him watch YouTube and get him to watch Cbeebies instead.

M1526 · 31/12/2021 10:46

I wanted my 2 year old to see stuff we can't do it get to. Example being going to a water park with big slides, literally not possible any time soon. Experiences we can't do IRL. I'm not totally against screen time or you tube. Always supervised for 10mins in the day etc

What about Topsy and Tim on Cbeebies? It's nauseating at times, but it's not the exploitative crap you often find on youtube.

M1526 · 31/12/2021 10:47

Does cbeebies have real life kid shows?

We have Disney plus
Amazon prime video
Channel 4
Channel 5
ITV

No BBC due to no TV licence, DH nor I are big TV watchers

Yes it does. Graces amazing machines, Andys dinosaurs are good and there are plenty of others.
MonicaGellerBing · 31/12/2021 10:50

You need Blippi! Educational and fun and no spoilt kids in sight!

user1493494961 · 31/12/2021 10:50

You still need a TV licence to watch ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

MintyGreenDream · 31/12/2021 10:50

Blippi? Educational and aimed at toddlers

MintyGreenDream · 31/12/2021 10:51

Cross Post!

Legoisthebest · 31/12/2021 10:51

You can probably get all the Cbeebies programmes on YouTube if you haven't got iPlayer.
Personally having access to Cbeebies and CBBC channels (Cbeebies - for under 6s, CBBC for 6+) is worth paying the license fee for. They are highly regulated to what they show and pretty much everything on Cbeebies has an educational or real life experience theme.

Whinge · 31/12/2021 10:52

Yes it does. Topsy and Tim sounds like it fits what you're looking for. It shows different experiences and activities such as riding a bike, visiting a farm etc

Topsy and Tim

FruityPolos · 31/12/2021 10:52

Our Family and My First on CBeebies / iPlayer. Or Maddie's Do You Know also on CBeebies / iPlayer - my daughter was obsessed with Maddie when aged 3 in lockdown 1.

YouTube content is always going to be adverts / branded as that's how they make any money.

M1526 · 31/12/2021 10:54

I'll look for the cbeebies content as I haven't tried it, thank you!

You still need a TV licence to watch ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. Absolutely not legally correct as we don't watch live streaming (traditional) content, ever. Nor anything on iPlayer.

Another vote for blippi

Albgo · 31/12/2021 10:57

Although

Boombastic22 · 31/12/2021 10:58

Perhaps you’d be better paying for a TV licence. CBeebies are highly educational. Much better than the other streaming services.

I would not have my 2 year old watching YouTube. There’s no need to watch real life activities you can’t do. Either take them or if you can’t then I would not let them know what they are missing out on.

Starcaller · 31/12/2021 11:01

My nearly 3yo DD likes watching videos of people making things with playdoh Grin Then she will go off and attempt to replicate it (which doesn't really work but it's good that she gives it a go!).

M1526 · 31/12/2021 11:04

We did that with Lego (Duplo).

Showed kids building basic stuff and followed along. We're in the Same room playing with DC actively... Isn't that a wonderful thing, you wouldn't see that as an amazing tech development?
I'm not a huge fan of TV or screen time but I honestly can't see what 10mins of building Lego together while watching other kids for inspiration will harm dc for.

But appreciate the input and suggestions, blippi could work as it is real life too

I agree with cbeebies, I haven't watched much of it for a while so not sure what's new, but Topsy and Tim would fit the bill, also Lets go for a walk, which is a group of young children exploring different outdoor places.
You need a tv licence to watch cbeebies though (definitely don't need it for itv, c4, c5 if you are watching on catch up - you only need a licence if you are watching any BBC content on any device or watching live tv on any channel as it's broadcast).

Vampirethriller · 31/12/2021 11:05

Cbeebies has some really good real life programmes. Vets, bugs, dinosaurs, Graces Amazing Machines etc, my 3 year old loves Andy and his dinosaur adventures.

Littlewhiteballs · 31/12/2021 11:10

Another vote for Blippi. As annoying as he is to adults, kids love him and his content doesn't involve unboxing toys or playing video games.

Ponoka7 · 31/12/2021 11:14

From around 2 my GD liked the baby bus panda. My GC do watch the unboxing as well, but they are now 4 & 7. I used to just search for the play ones.
