Pound in the trolley?

Having a slightly drunken argument with dh. We are both early 30s. He swears that a staple memory of his childhood was putting a pound in the supermarket trolley, IN ALL SUPERMARKETS!! I swear this was never a thing until Aldi and Lidl arrived in the U.K. I swear I remember news articles about how great they were but you had to have a pound for the trolley, it was so notable. I don’t remember ever putting a £ in the trolley in my childhood. I grew upon the SE, Dh in the SW. was it really a common thing in the 90s?

YABU pound in the trolley was completely normal

YANB pound in the trolley was introduced by Lidl/ Aldi

YABU
I definitely remember it from
Childhood so before aldi and lidl but I did live in a rough area

olympicsrock · 30/12/2021 21:09

Neither . Most supermarkets did not need a pound for the trolley but not limited to Aldi and Lidl - most inner city supermarkets and some Tesco/ Asda/ sainsbury’s

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/12/2021 21:09

Way before Aldi and Lidl.

dementedpixie · 30/12/2021 21:09

Certainly existed before aldi/lidl as we have neither of those stores in my home town

gamerchick · 30/12/2021 21:09

I remember the pound coming in and the doing away of pound notes so doubtful in my childhood Grin

GrandDuchessRomanov · 30/12/2021 21:11

I can't honestly remember but I can remember having to use a penny for public toilets.

Showing my age now!

Hmmph · 30/12/2021 21:11

It was 10p. I used to love collecting up discarded trolleys as a child in 80s

InTheLabyrinth · 30/12/2021 21:12

Coins to get a trolley definitely predates Aldi/Lidl. But not at all supermarkets.

Starfekk · 30/12/2021 21:12

I remember trolleys always needing a pound coin to be released from their shackles! No idea which supermarket started it though.

falalalalalalablahblah · 30/12/2021 21:12

Early 90s onward, Asda & Sainos definitely needed a £1 coin.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 30/12/2021 21:12

Exactly what I was going to post. We definitely had coin operated trolleys when I was growing up, it wasn't the best area in the world but I don't think we were uncommon.
moochies · 30/12/2021 21:12

I remember it as a child in the early 90s.

^ this is what I was going to say.
ohidoliketobe · 30/12/2021 21:14

NW here and in my mid 30s and can remember my mum and nan having to use a coin for trolleys at Safeway and Kwick Save when I was little (went together to do Friday night big shop)

GnomeyGnome · 30/12/2021 21:14

Early 90's child and definitely remember the pound in the trolley. My siblings and I would argue over who got to put the trolley back!

BashfulClam · 30/12/2021 21:15

Out local Asda did it in the early 90’s. There was a large river nearby and they wanted to avoid them ending up there, then the other supermarkets nearby followed suit.

RedCandyApple · 30/12/2021 21:16

What? They all still need a pound where I am in London, including Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s (I don’t shop in Lidl or Aldi) it’s so annoying when you don’t have one but yes my local supermarkets all still require a pound for the trolley

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 30/12/2021 21:16

I remember having to put £ in the trolleys in kwik save and Safeway and that was early 90’s

DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2021 21:16

I'm in my 50s. Putting a coin in a trolley depended on the area where the supermarket was. In nicer areas you didn't need a coin, in not so nice areas you did. I think it did become more widespread after Aldi/Lidl appeared on the scene.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/12/2021 21:17

Only in dodgy towns. SW here too.

BakeOffRewatch · 30/12/2021 21:17

20p, Waitrose trolleys in 90s in Home Counties market town. I remember I loved it cos of the shape slotting in.

PurpleCushions · 30/12/2021 21:17

I worked in kwiksave as a student in the late 90s and trolleys needed a pound then.

Ohyesiam · 30/12/2021 21:17

Sainsbury’s in muswell hill in 1989 definitely has trolleys that took a pound.

AppleKatie · 30/12/2021 21:18

It varies now and it has always varied. Some places you need one (centre of town/near a river/particularly rough area/districting manager) some places (less things in walking distance/more laissez faire manager) you don’t need one.

OverByYer · 30/12/2021 21:18

Im 50 and I can recall putting a pound coin in the trolley way before Aldi/ lidl came along.
