To ask for advice re keeping hand dry

Posting for traffic. So yesterday I managed to cut my hand rather deeply and needed 3 stitches 🤦‍♀️ I'm not allowed to get the bandage wet for 7 days. I don't have a shower so will be bathing. Will a rubber glove with an elastic band around the wrist be enough to keep it dry? I haven't got any latex gloves but I do have some plastic ones from hair dye but don't think they will be strong enough. Never had to do this before! Advice appreciated

I suggest using cling first then the rubber glove using a very, very tight rubber band. Then very quick one handed bath!

Mamamia7962 · 30/12/2021 18:43

Use a washing up glove because they come further up the arm, and obviously don't put that hand in the bath. This is what I have been doing with a broken thumb!

Yy to clingfilm first. I sustained a significant burn on my hand so for showers and baths I'd cling film over the dressing, rubber glove, elastic band round the top.

TeamSpike · 30/12/2021 18:47

Ah yes didn't think of cling film. Good tip. Washing hair left handed should be interesting

I bought my son a Limbo (on Amazon) when he broke his wrist. Have to say it was very good on the waterproof front.

Queenie8 · 30/12/2021 18:56

I 2nd the limbo. I have used them lots of times and they are brilliant. Well worth the £20 approx

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2021 19:02

If it were me I’d run a shallow Bath easier all round to keep one hand out and manage to wash hair etc. If you have a Bath ! Otherwise above plan sounds good - hope it heals well.

Daftasabroom · 30/12/2021 19:02

I've used a limbo for a broken leg, it was great. Generally I just hold my arm in the air. I've also had waterproof dressing following back surgery, probably wouldn't work well on something like a hand though.

Agree and there's a good second hand market for them on eBay etc

Wash hair, one handed, in sink with a jug or shower attachment.

Shallow bath for the rest of you and keep that hand out of the bath.

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2021 19:18

I used waterproof wound dressing recently ‘tegoderm’ for awful deep scrape. Kept it wet underneath which is newish advice re wound healing. Has healed with far less scarring than I was expecting. Good luck op.

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2021 19:22

Should add that tegoderm I used would not keep stiched scar waterproof in shower ! It’s more for when things are healing /scrapes etc.

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 30/12/2021 19:26

I had a limbo when I broke my wrist, I have very long thick curly hair that needs washing frequently or I end up looking like a ginger Russell brand in a bad day, it was amazing and kept my cast completely dry, I then gave it to a friend who broke her wrist about a year later and she loved it too

TeamSpike · 30/12/2021 19:30

Thanks all. Definitely need a bath tonight and a hair wash. Will look at the limbo on amazon too. Its not too painful. Only if I move in the wrong way. Pretty sure there'll be a nasty scar though. That'll teach me to wash a glass unsupervised 😂

Limbo definitely. Tried all the other methods before when I cut my finger but bought a limbo before hand surgery. Was so so much easier and better results.

My mum tried to stop me buying her a leg limbo when she cut her leg but I wasn’t having any of it! Also she’s done the same thing on the other leg recently so had quite a lot of use!

bogdanasreadbylesleymanville · 30/12/2021 19:48

Tegaderm dressings are great but on the hand they don’t stay on that well because of all the movement. That was with a limbo too. For other areas they seem to work better waterproof wise.
