Do you ever cook new dishes you haven't made before when having guests over?

When you have guests coming round, do you feel comfortable attempting a recipe you've never made before? I'd feel scared to do that as it may go wrong, and when you're already making other components to the meal it makes things more stressful.

YANBU - it's too risky to try a new recipe when guests are coming round and you want to impress
YABU - it's fine to use a recipe you haven't tested yet when guests are over

Why risk it? It's a lose-lose proposition, since you have no idea whether it's even nice if it does succeed.

I did recently with a close friend. More a laid back dinner, not a special dinner party though. I attempted a South African mince dish I'd never tried before- he is from there. It apparently came out well and I've made it several times since.

I have done - smoked haddock and gruyere souffle (which was fantastic by the way) but it's not something I would do normally. Not sure why I did it that time, I think it is something I had wanted to try and maybe they weren't meat eaters (not vegetarians).

My good old favourite tried and tested are rolled out but I’m not very confident cooking.

Yes but only if its something that looks like it will work. If the it looks too liquidy or something I'll try it first.

Depends on what the new dish is. If you cook regularly then you tend to know what will work and if it's got similar ingredients to something else you can kind of tell it will be ok. If it's a completely new dish which has ingredients that I'd never usually use or a piece of meat to cook in a specific way then I wouldn't!

I'm not an instinctive cook so I always make something I am familiar with. If possible, I make it in advance too. No last minute pressure or risk of burning things. Much less stressy.

I guess it depends on your skill.

Depends on what it is really but its often a good time to experiment and cook something bigger than we would usually have. If it’s absolutely awful then you can laugh about it and get a takeaway

I will occasionally try a new recipe on guests but I'm far more likely to repeat a recipe I have already tried

I do try new things but nothing too out there or risky. So basically I could try a new blueberry pie but I wouldn't make a beef Wellington without trying it first.
