Would you collect this?

If someone was selling something locally, would you collect it if you knew they had Covid?

They have said they’ll put it out under their carport and we can post the money through their letterbox. If we wore gloves to collect, would this be safe? How long would you quarantine it once home before touching it?

It’s a baby bundle - bouncer, playmat and car seat.

YABU: no you shouldn’t collect yet

YANBU: yes it’s safe to collect if you wear gloves and quarantine it when you got home.

Yes of course, bit of a wipe and wash the clothes. People still have so much anxiety about this, it’s surprising.

Bluntness100 · 30/12/2021 15:01

Put of curiosity op, do you not go to shops? Do you wear gloves when you do?

The person she's collecting from actually definitely has covid. That's why she's concerned.
@HeddaGarbled

I didn't know this either. Recently when my husband was isolating from me in the house he made sure not to touch light switches and so on.. because we just thought it could still be transmitted on surfaces.

No need to call someone 'ignorant' - if the information has never presented itself to them via media or conversations etc, and they haven't gone out looking for it, then that'll be why they don't know.
Not knowing something is the very definition of ignorant what's wrong with that?

I do find it quite astounding that people still think you get covid from touching things.

@Rainbowabacus1

For those saying we shouldn’t collect yet, what part do you feel is risky and made you vote it was too risky. (More of you than I thought!) Haven’t made up my mind yet Blush
Because Covid can survive on some surfaces for up to 72 hours. At work when someone dies with Covid their belongings get packed up in sealed plastic bags by nursing staff and relatives are told to not open immediately and quarantine.

GiveMeMyKeys: I do find it quite astounding that people still think you get covid from touching things.

I've just looked it up on Google and every link seems to say that contamination via infected surfaces has a low risk of transmission.

Even the World Health Organisation says: "People may also become infected when touching their eyes, nose or mouth after touching surfaces or objects that have been contaminated by the virus. "

So what is your evidence that there is no risk?

KeyWorker · 30/12/2021 15:34

I would. If you’ve got the time and space you could put straight into bin bags and leave the items in the boot if your car/shed/anywhere it’s not in the way for a few days if it makes you feel better. Otherwise clean it all when you get home.

With the car seat, it’s not ideal to use a second hand one if you don’t know it’s history. Take all the covers off when you get home, check all the polystyrene is intact. If they have already washed the covers ask how hot, as washing above 40 can damage the flame resistance of the fabric. Also, is it complete with all original inserts as using inserts not for that seat might not be as safe. Just a few things to think about, car seat safety is super important to me so I often point these things out to anyone who will listenSmile

@GiveMeMyKeys
"Not knowing something is the very definition of ignorant what's wrong with that?"

You know as well as I do that calling someone else ignorant often has a negative tone, and the fact that HeddaGarbled deleted the original message just confirms that that was the intent when he/she said it.

HeddaGarbled · 30/12/2021 16:58

I didn’t delete it - Mumsnet did. I stand by my comment.

At the very least, I would suggest you do your own research rather than rely on information gleaned from people who also seem not to be up to date with current knowledge.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 30/12/2021 17:19

Covid or none, a second hand car seat is a huge no no! Why would you risk it?

RedHelenB · 30/12/2021 17:20

Yes, and then disinfect it all.

latethursday · 30/12/2021 17:30

For all the reasons mentioned above, the chance of you catching anything through surface transmission are vanishingly rare. But yeah, don't take the car seat.
