Strange introduction!

I would be interested to know your thoughts on the following situation. Last week I was invited by my sister-in-law to join her with some of her friends at a local pub for birthday drinks. When I arrived at their table, she introduced me to a new friend of hers, “Cathy” by saying: “Cathy this is my sister-in-law, Dubbin; she’s sensible like you!” Followed by an explosion of giggles. AIBU to think this was a bit strange?

Not really… YABU… 🤷‍♀️🙄

Obviously some sort of private joke between your sil and Cathy.
I'd find this quite rude tbh.

kmbegs · 29/12/2021 22:36

I would find that strange and would assume there was a backstory that you're not being told.

WorraLiberty · 29/12/2021 22:37

That would depend on what she said when you asked her what she meant, surely?

horsemadgal · 29/12/2021 23:50

Are you sensible?

Dubbin · 29/12/2021 23:59

@horsemadgal

Are you sensible?
I would say I’m averagely sensible, but wouldn’t normally be defined by it! Nobody who knows me well would describe me as such. That’s why it surprised me!

Maybe Cathy isn't sensible either and they were tipsy enough to find it a hilarious joke to describe her that way?

EdinaMonsoon · 30/12/2021 00:08

I would find it strange because they were clearly excluding you from an in joke between the two of them. Not cool in my book. I'm sure some people will say lighten up but honestly I think it's rude - even if it's not meant to be.

Hairyfriend · 30/12/2021 00:10

Strange if neither explained what they meant and carried on giggling about their own 'in joke'. Fine if it was something light hearted and explained to you at the time.

I think I’ve been unclear....Cathy didn’t laugh at all; she looked slightly awkward if anything. It was my SIL who found it hilarious. I tried to make light of it as it was a social occasion. I said something like “well Cathy we’ll just have to prove we’re not (sensible) won’t we?!”

Hopefully this was the case!

Just a drunken nonsense.

Forget about it
