Used to fix potholes on the private estate of a tory peer ? Muppets just can't stop themselves can they Grin ? How many fecking potholes did this guy have ? Several miles of uncovered top soil or were they literally filling the holes with fivers and tenners ?

Really,.do you have a link?

plinkplinkfizzer · 29/12/2021 22:20

Think the former sec, of state for housing and his underling did this to for funds destined for deprived areas . Neither of their constituencies were deprived . Robert Jenrick . Crooks .

Lisa Nandy Labour MP has written to Gove to complain about this

And so it continues.
The tories are ALL in it for themselves. Always have been.

Hellokittyninja · 29/12/2021 22:38

Probably because it’s the driveway to the museum at Charleston which is a great asset to the local community and beyond.

Oh that will get results then!
TheCrowFromBelow · 29/12/2021 22:57

The driveway is pwned by the Viscount who sold Charleston, it isnused by his tenant farmers and estate workers as well as visitors. Charleston isnt a such a great asset to the SE that funds ringfenced for levelling up should be used. There are many, many areas acrosss East and West Sussex that money coudl have been used for.
West Sussex schools are chronically underfunded, the money could have gone there.

TheCrowFromBelow · 29/12/2021 22:59

Sorry about typos. Im really cross about this.
It is one of the wealthiest estates in the UK, in a very wealthy area. It is completely taking the piss tobuse levelling up funds for this.

Theyellowflamingo · 29/12/2021 22:59

Govey?

Never unreasonable to write and ask an elected representative or minister about the decisions they are making - it’s part of democracy. Have you written?

jcyclops · 29/12/2021 23:09

"Charleston has not received any money from the Levelling Up Fund. This project was allocated funding from the Getting Building Fund by the South East Local Enterprise Partnership, whose independent evaluators assessed it as offering value for money."

"Charleston is a charity-owned, internationally recognised site of cultural importance, with a museum and art gallery, and this work is estimated to provide a £1.6 million boost to the local economy by creating jobs and increasing visitor numbers."

To spin the story differently:

Labour's Lisa Nandy has objected to spending public money that helps a cultural attraction and museum run by a charity that provides local jobs and provides a significant boost to the local economy. "Steps should be taken to ensure it does not happen again" said Nandy.

TheCrowFromBelow · 30/12/2021 01:59

To quote Nandy quoting Johnson from the same article - "..the Getting Building Fund was designed to “finally tackle this country’s great unresolved challenges of the last three decades” and “mend the indefensible gap in opportunity and productivity and connectivity between the regions of the UK”."

I would like to see the full breakdown of the estimated £1.6m benefit to the local economy of filling in potholes on private land owned by an exceptionally wealthy individual who has the funds to manage his own land better.

If anything the “ true “ truth is even uglier Crankley.

Sounds a plan. Utilize existing assets better and maybe, just maybe, other money follows it.

I'd hazard the guess that as everyone is suddenly an expert on everything especially when it's to do with the Tories, the independent panel may just be conscious that their decision will be scrutinized.

Christ, the delusion.

Queenoftrivialpersuit · 30/12/2021 10:11

There are so many wealthy landowners that take advantage of various grants. That’s why they employ people to look after their estates.
It’s standard.

TomPinch · 30/12/2021 10:20

If it's a road that the public have the right to use, surely it's irrelevant whose land it's on.

CorrBlimeyGG · 30/12/2021 10:39

The roads in my town (c. 30,000 population) are in an atrocious state. But somehow they don't qualify for this funding. Why is that?

ThreeFeetTall · 30/12/2021 10:40

Why is this fund not for 'cultural and heritage assets' in deprived areas?
How can it be levelling up if you are already up?

Don't they? Did whoever owns them apply?
Yants · 31/12/2021 05:47

So the 'charity' running this Charleston site has absolutely no links what so ever to the tory peer?

Many of the landed gentry set up part or all of their property or other assets into some form of 'charity' as a way of avoiding taxes and receiving funding, Im happy to be proved wrong but I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is the case here.

UsernameInTheTown · 31/12/2021 06:02

Ah the meaning of "levelling up" becomes clear. They mean filling pot holes to give a level road surface.

Charlestonhas8million · 31/12/2021 07:31

I know this area has local villages desperate for road repairs that are being denied because of lack of funds.

Charleston is a lovely place and well supported locally but, even after covid it has £8 million in the bank.

The Gage family who own the land and have far more than that I am sure they are incredibly wealthy.
