Not aibu but shamelessly stealing the attention from here...Just intrigued really. I'm a maid of honour for my Northern friend and she has a few lovely subtle references to the North in her wedding that she has revealed to us tonight and a wedding march song which is personal to her... What are your experiences in your own wedding or others where you have added a reaoly special personal touch and the stories behind them?

My beloved grandma made a tier of our wedding cake to a special family recipe that has come down the family for generations.

She made her tier and our cake maker collected it and incorporated it into our wedding cake.

It was an incredibly personal and lovely gesture. I cannot describe the feeling it gave me - and her.

This recipe by the way, is still hidden by my grandmother. None of us are allowed it yet!

I kept empty glass baby food/coffee jars, decorated them with ribbons, candles and flowers for table decorations.

My favours were home made tablet and rocky road.

I created and printed the wedding schedules handed out before the ceremony.

Dita73 · 29/12/2021 23:39

Not wanting to be there was quite unique I guess

DilemmaDelilah · 30/12/2021 07:30

Very tiny, family only wedding. Cooked the food for the wedding lunch myself (boeuf bourguignonne and a cold buffet - no vegetarians!), but got 2 lovely helpers to get everything ready and to wash up. Bought undecorated cakes from Marks and Spencer and decorated them with flowers. It was in a building with a large room for the meal, and a couple of separate areas, and I set up one with books and drawing stuff for the children so that had somewhere quiet to go if they got overwhelmed with all the grown-up stuff. It was a lovely relaxed day.

OneOfTheGrundys · 30/12/2021 07:41

We walked down the aisle together. No one was ‘giving’ me away. I made a speech. The oldest (GPs) did the readings.
That was it. Not unique I’m sure but felt right.

Wiredforsound · 30/12/2021 07:42

I designed and printed my wedding invitations on the most beautiful heavy paper. My dad wrote the guest names on them in the most beautiful calligraphy (he’s an expert calligrapher).

DropYourSword · 30/12/2021 07:51

I got both my mum and dad to walk me down the aisle.
I had an absolutely bare bones wedding, very little spent. But we had an owl as our ring bearer - it swooped down the aisle with our rings in a little pouch! And I had small owl candles as wedding favours for the 10 guests we had!

I’ll never understand why people feel the need to spend ridiculous money on a wedding, you can still have an incredibly special day with only a small expense.

hashbrownsandwich · 30/12/2021 07:53

I walked down the aisle with my husband. We entered this marriage in equal footings.

TinyLittlePandaSneeze · 30/12/2021 08:01

I wouldn't worry about being unique. It is special because of the people getting married.

whywouldntyou · 30/12/2021 08:06

Rather outing but what the hell! We cross stitched all our wedding invitations. I made my cake and a friend decorated it, we also made my (dried flower) bouquet. My sister made my wedding dress - and the grooms and bestmans waistcoats. SIL made bridesmaids dresses. This sounds like it could have been awful, but everyone was skilled at what they did(friend went on to be a florist, sister made wedding dresses professionally etc) and it made it so personal it was wonderful.

ToffeePennie · 30/12/2021 08:12

We named our tables after shows we were in together.
I did the speeches (very shy husband)
We had cakes made to a family recipe as our centrepieces and used my own personal collection of cake stands and vintage teapots.
My brother (calligrapher) wrote everything for us, so his handwriting was totally unique.
We had a specific type of alcohol for the toasts - my husband grew up with that type of alcohol being served at important functions so it was really important to us that we honoured him!

TinyLittlePandaSneeze · 30/12/2021 08:15

I think the thing is even if someone thinks it is "unique" there will be someone who has done something similar unless it's really really out there.

Like the walking down the aisle together, I've seen this a couple of times now. And I went to one where the bride made a big fuss about how we wouldn't expect to see the bride make a speech but lots of us had been to another friend's a month before where the bride had made a speech.

If everyone just for what they want then it will all be lovely whatever x

I’ll never understand why others feel the need to make comment on things that have nothing to do with them and don’t impact on them in any way.

"I kept empty glass baby food/coffee jars, decorated them with ribbons, candles and flowers for table decorations. "

@thefourgp I did this too!

Swimmum78 · 30/12/2021 08:25

I loved the music to a particular song but the words were inappropriate for a wedding. My dh contacted the (fairly well known) bands manager and they sent us an instrumental version for me to walk down the aisle to. They have asked us never to share the music as we are the only people other than the band to have it.

AnonymousArmadillo · 30/12/2021 08:28

My wedding was all around a specific interest of mine. My mum made nearly all of our decorations, invitations, cake, etc. All of the flowers were handmade from paper (or icing on the cake).

My sister designed our order of service which we made into a magazine/newspaper with different sections for guests to read whilst they were waiting for things to start. I wrote my speech and put it in there (I didn’t want guests to have to listen to hundreds of speeches whilst hungry), there were comic strips, a section about the bridal party with descriptions written by DH and me, a picture on the front that turned into a video if you downloaded a certain app.

Our music during the reception was instrumental movie soundtracks as both DH and I love films.

Between the wedding and the food, we had music performed by my friend.

My friends wrote and performed their reading all about me and DH but they managed to link it to things we both love.

I absolutely loved my wedding. It wasn’t the cheapest but it was worth every penny to us. We had an amazing day and I would do it 100x over and still love it every time.

cptartapp · 30/12/2021 08:28

Instead of place names we had photos of each guest in small silver frames. Some from childhood, some silly, some embarrassing, some memorable etc, depending on the age/sense of humour of the guest.
Definitely a talking point.

Whatafustercluck · 30/12/2021 08:35

Very small wedding, immediate family only. My sister (who is very creative) made the place settings and invitations. Wedding favours were lottery tickets. Wedding cake made locally (we got married a long way from home) was me and dh in wellies in front of the pyramid stage at Glastonbury. Wedding dress was not traditional but a beautiful plum colour. We used a photography student building his portfolio for our photographs and paid only about £100 yet he produced the best wedding photographs we've ever seen (lots of fly on the wall type, not posed). We got married at Glastonbury Town Hall, but most of our photos used the Wells Cathedral grounds backdrop and Glastonbury Tor (which we climbed with the photographer after the town hall). I walked down the 'aisle' to Nina Simone's 'Feeling Good' and walked out of the town hall to the Housemartins' Caravan of Love (except the cd wouldn't play, so our guests sang it instead!) I did a weddiing breakfast speech rather than dh. And we honeymooned at Glastonbury Festival.

SuziLikeSuziQ · 30/12/2021 08:42

A cousin as our photographer. Musician friends doing the wedding music - and I asked them to surprise us so we had no idea what they would play at each part - but each bit of music they chose related to me and my DH somehow (we met doing music)! The most amazing wedding shoes, hand decorated for me with art that related to my favourite book on the sides and soles and then crystals on the heels. Having 8 different Victoria sponge cakes as our wedding cake (brought by some of the guests).

MimiDaisy11 · 30/12/2021 08:47

We don’t like wearing rings so we’re likely doing a hand fasting ceremony or lighting candles in place of exchanging rings. I plan to make the ribbon/cord or candles and put in personal touches. We haven’t decided yet or thought about what they’ll be.
