Went Ice skating . Tried my best . Partner making comment , u look ridiculous etc. I said ah they do really good food here . Also a comment saying if you were back in the office they would call u a dustbin. I only had a tuna pasta for lunch . By 6pm i was hungry . Feel like I have no confidence

Sorry for derailing.... but I have never been able to any kind of skate (or swim 😕) but I have taught adult friends how to ride a bike and yet somehow it never occurred to me that skating lessons exist 🤔.

MrsMoastyToasty · 30/12/2021 09:48

I grew up in Bristol which had a permanent ice rink. Despite going there many times I never got the hang of it. I even met Robin Cousins once.

RampantIvy · 30/12/2021 09:53

I agree with the blunt blades comment. It makes a huge difference. I used to love ice skating, but I had my own boots, and used to get the blades sharpened regularly.

The other top is to make sure your boots are tight enough or they won't support your ankles.

I don't think many people can skate after just one session

Lanique · 30/12/2021 11:26

@Changechangychange sorry for derail, but can you (or anyone else) recommend some ice skates? I'd like to buy some for myself. All the ones on sale look like figure skates and I think I'd rather have the chunky ones like the hire ones!

cloudyrain · 30/12/2021 11:42

We used to ice skate for fun as teenagers, I could always manage to go round the rink looking competent but could never do anything fancy such as skate backwards. My then boyfriend was absolutely hopeless and never got it, he played and was good at many sports, just couldn't master ice skating.

I am now very much a spectator to my DC at the rink as I have dodgy knees, however it is still interesting to see who can and who can't skate, and it is usually surprising.

Your 'D'P is a knob

FindingMeno · 30/12/2021 11:45

I can't ice skate either.
I can't think of a sensible scenario where it would be a failing.
Refuse to go. I do.
And do something you find enriching for you.

DropYourSword · 30/12/2021 12:00

Your partner is just being horrible.

I took my DP ice skating once and he was like Bambi on ice. Seriously, it was like we’d strapped skates on an octopus and he was trying to go in 8 different directions at once. I’ve never seen someone so bad. We both fell about the place laughing good naturedly and DP felt like a pub outing might be a better option for him. It should be fun to try new things with a partner. You should be there to support each other. Your DP making horrible comments and affecting your self confidence is totally shit and entirely unnecessary. You deserve better.

theshadeofgreen · 30/12/2021 22:22

10stone isn't fat.... ice skating isn't a necessity... your partner isn't a kind man.

You deserve better op ❤️

AllYouCanEatBrestaurant · 30/12/2021 22:27

This isn't about ice skating, or eating, it's about being with a jerk who makes you feel miserable. Why out yourself through that?

Sunsetsupernova · 30/12/2021 22:32

Lots of people can’t ice skating, he sounds like a dick. Also the winter ice rinks they put up aren’t great, I saw that Somerset House has had to close today as the ice is melting so much. We went earlier this week and it was definitely watery.

As an aside, can anyone recommend lessons in SE London? We go every year and I love it but can’t do anything fancier than going round in circles.

Merryoldgoat · 30/12/2021 22:34

Your thread title should be ‘What’s the best way to dump my twat of a partner’

Raise your fucking standards.

edwinbear · 30/12/2021 22:37

I can sort of ice skate, as in I can skate forwards round the rink, not fall over and hold DC up when they lose their balance. I can’t do spins or skate backwards. DH has a penguin or sit on banana, under the guise of giving it to the kids, who don’t really need them anymore. It is funny watching him, but as with PP, we (me and DC) laugh with him, not at him. I’d not go skating with someone who laughed at me. You get all sorts of ability at ice rinks, it’s supposed to be fun, not an opportunity to take the piss out of people.

NoNotMeNoSiree · 30/12/2021 22:43

Your '' dear '' partner is an arsehole.
So what if you can't ice skate?
I bet he's no Torvill and Dean on the rink either.
As for commenting on what you eat, tell him to shut up or you'll eat HIM.
Right before binning him as he sounds a delight.
Not

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 30/12/2021 22:50

Your non so 'D'P sounds a bit like my X who was good with a snidey remark just as I was enjoying myself, to undermine my confidence.

I love ice-skating and I'm reasonably good (as in, can move and stay upright) This is surprisingly as I'm generally awkward and clumsy just on normL ground and rubbish at most sport! I think it's because I spend a lot of my childhood in roller skates!

Like a PP said, if you're having fun and moving forward then you're better at ice skating than most people. Don't let him spoil it for you

@Angelica122345

Trying hard to loose weight , I’m 10 stone , but comments of negativity make me wanna eat
How tall are you, lovely? I'm quite short and 10 stone and only just on the edge of thinking I could do with losing few pounds for health reasons. Definitely not overweight and I bet you're not either xx

SE London - Streatham Ice is the obvious place. It’s about £40 a month for a 30 min weekly class.
Changechangychange · 31/12/2021 00:56

@Lanique go to a shop and try on different makes - different brands suit different foot shapes.

You need to decide if you want figure skates (with a pick on the front of the blade to allow you to do pirouettes and jumps), or hockey/recreational skates (good for fast changes in direction, easier to fall over if you lean too far forwards or backwards). Most people in the UK have figure skates.

Then just pick some that fit. My current pair were secondhand - unless you are a high level figure skater or competitive hockey player you don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds on them.
