To not want to make my new years resolution a diet?

shipgig · 29/12/2021 14:26

One of my new years resolution for 2021 was to lose weight by my birthday (October) and I am pleased to say, I did lose 3 stone 7 pounds (49pounds). I am 5ft 7 and was 13st7 and got down to 10stone exactly.

Since my birthday, I have fallen off the wagon and have not been watching what I eat/exercising and I know that I have piled some back on. I am not sure how much (too afraid to get on the scales) especially with all of the christmas eating too!!.

I do know that clothes aren't fitting me. Lets just say jeans won't button and I've not dared to try anything else on.

Would you lose the gained weight as a 2022 resolution, to get back in shape? or would you not bother? (given how stressful life is at the moment)

I am still in 'lose weight' mode but I refuse to overly diet or restrict myself as I know that's not sustainable, I'm looking at long term (years) rather than short term.

I stick to 1500 calories most days, but at weekends have a takeaway or some sort of treat.

I also go to the gym 4-5 times a week. I hate cardio but enjoy strength training, so a reward for 3km on the treadmill is my upper body workout. It's about building habits. I'm at the gym anyway for my fun bit, I'm allowed to do that if I do my cardio first.

OwlinaTree · 30/12/2021 21:22

Not popular on here, but I do slimming world.
I basically stick to the slimming world plan Monday to Friday, then if I go out or whatever at the weekend I'll have what I fancy.

Mummadeze · 30/12/2021 21:23

If you put it on quickly over Xmas, you can lose it quickly now. I wouldn’t want to undo all that hard work if I were you.

shipgig · 30/12/2021 21:28

@Mummadeze its been a steady increase since October. I am not sure how much, as I am too afraid to weigh myself.

I've never been interested in lifting weights. As I don't want to get bulky.

I do like cardio as I find it de-stresses me. I do miss walking.

@OwlinaTree I don't know much about the plan.

You won’t. It’s pretty hard for women to bulk up. Weights just give to a great shape.

OwlinaTree · 30/12/2021 21:52

It's protein and veg, complex carbs - unlimited.
Processed carbs - not much
Limited dairy.
Low fat, low sugar.

Stellaris22 · 30/12/2021 21:53

I've been weight training for 8 months and I'm not bulky, neither is PT (who is tiny). I love feeling strong and being toned.

shipgig · 30/12/2021 22:03

@Stellaris22 ooh great! I may look into it. Thanks :)

You don't have to lose weight if you are happy as you are of course. But don't look at it as a failure because you put weight back on. Think about if, if you didn't lose weight to begin with, you probably would have still gained weight since October and right now you would be six stones over your ideal instead of three. Unpopular opinion but I don't think yo yo dieting is that bad. For lots of people, including myself, the alternative is continuously gaining weight.

AlphabetStew · 30/12/2021 22:16

Chuck it out! Free yourself from the relentless tyranny of dieting! Dare to imagine a world where you eat something and don't; meticulously weigh each ingredient, immediately log it into a food tracking app, count every calorie, obsessively estimate the amount of condiment/flavouring/cooking aid that needs to be tracked and logged and accounted for dagnammit!!

Godspeed @shipgig Go forth and enjoy your life. And to all who decide to ditch the perpetual diet in 2022. May we live in peace.

I haven't gained 3 stone back though. I'm not sure how much has gone back on (I am too afraid to weigh).

I was done with the wagon so decided I had to make a choice, either accept I'm fat and that's the way it is or have one last real go at weight loss. So I booked a gastric bypass and haven't looked back.

shipgig · 30/12/2021 22:31

Well done @OmgIThinkILikeYou bit extreme for me though. I think I've gained a stone. Maybe a bit more.

I thought about trying a resolution to eat all my lunches as something veggie, could easily tweak that to being healthy veggie stuff to help your weight goals and the planet a bit. I also agree about setting activity goals. They often say dieting and exercise at the same time is hard because you need the calories for the exercise but since you’ve lost the majority of what you wanted to maybe exercise could be your key to maintaining? Very best of luck and HNY

shipgig · 31/12/2021 09:50

@Caterinasballerinas thanks. Good luck to you too! :)

1st4 (18pounds) on.

That’s not a scary amount to work on losing if you want to. It’s close to what you thought?
Well done for finding out where you are.

EmmaH2022 · 01/01/2022 22:12

OP
I need to lose 4 stone and I think what you have achieved is amazing

Do you mean you aren't sure about trying again?

I nearly started a weight loss thread today but the trouble s, it's pretty boring. I feel like I need to be accountable to me but I don't want to do the boring bits of reading or writing about a diet.

Do you have any tips? I usually fail at eating well in the first week!

I thought about that too but I care for my mum. Plus I'm terrified of surgery!

I am certainly thinking I should lose it

I'm similar, I tend to set targets, lose this by then, but once it's done let it all slip and put some back on.

Goals, targets etc are all part of the unhelpful diet mindset. What matters is habits - preferably focusing on embracing good ones, not banning yourself from bad ones. Fill up on nutritious food rather than focussing on what you shouldn't be eating.
