Fabulous new kitchen - but there's a problem...

My lovely kitchen was finished a few weeks ago. All great. However, when I was cleaning shelves in a couple of high cupboards I had to remove them as I couldn't see what I was doing. When I replaced them, I scraped a tiny bit of paint off the inside. Blamed myself for doing it on my own when I couldn't do it easily, it's just a couple of scrapes on the very inside, probably no one else would notice.
However - I have just seen another tiny scrape on the inside of the freezer door. Again, only half an inch or so. And another on another cupboard which is nearer 6" long. It looks as if maybe whatever was in the cupboard wasn't tucked away properly, so it has caught the paint.
Surely though, the paint shouldn't be coming off so easily? It was absolutely not a cheap kitchen, but even if it was it shouldn't be doing this? It was only completed on Monday!
They're obviously not there today so I can't speak to them. The front cupboards are high gloss and look beautiful but already I have 4 units which are damaged. No family here, no kids being careless. And I don't think it's reasonable for this to have happened. Am I just being precious?

I’d phone the joiner/company who installed it and ask them to come have a look

Normski67 · 28/12/2021 12:30

I doubt any guarantees would cover you if you remove cupboards and fit them again yourselves. However I’d go back to the suppliers about the freezer door and other cupboard.

Florence1960 · 28/12/2021 12:35

Pic one is where I clumsily slotted a shelf in. Pic 2 is the inside of the freezer door. Pic 3 is the 6" scrape which I have only just seen.

Thanks for your swift replies! I'm didn't remove a cupboard, just removed shelves so that I could clean them before putting stuff away.

Personally I would be gutted, but I do think this is what happens with ready made doors, though not usually so quickly. It's why I bought unfinished doors and painted them myself. So I could fix them if damaged. I feel your pain.

Piglet89 · 28/12/2021 12:55

IME, this is just what high gloss is like: I think it is one of the least durable finishes. I chipped mine when a plug swung down from the worktop against the cupboard door (and much else besides). It looked pretty tatty in places in under a year.

Florence1960 · 28/12/2021 13:01

Oh no! I chose it because I thought it would be really durable. The inside of the cupboards is not gloss though.

The inside is painted MDF and I wouldn't care at all..if you're bothered get some white paint?

bonetiredwithtwins · 28/12/2021 13:23

It looks to be the covering on the inside is that correct? If so it's likely just a laminated chipboard not the high gloss wrap on the outside which is a lot more durable

That being said the inside shouldn't scratch like that - who made the kitchen?

Hairyfriend · 28/12/2021 13:27

Other than the shelf you put back in and scraped, where the others done by whoever fitted it?

What brand is it? (currently looking for kitchen recommendations myself)

Florence1960 · 28/12/2021 13:34

It's a local firm which makes bespoke kitchens.
It is painted in the bespoke cupboard colour so it's not as easy as just painting it myself (why should I, anyway?) and I'm not sure anyone would be ok with this level of damage at this stage.

I really feel for you. I had a new gloss kitchen put in last year and it has chipped in a lot of places. It's gutting! I bought from DIY kitchens too which has a great reputation on here.

I bought a tester paint pot that matched the colour and covered the chips in that. You'd only notice if you got up close to inspect it, now.

Florence1960 · 28/12/2021 13:39

I was only aware of the little scrapes I did myself until just now. I am really hoping they will check everything and get it sorted for me but I obviously can't contact them today.
You pull the fridge and freezer doors open from the side so it is possible that I did the freezer scrape myself, with my nails. But that's bloody useless, isn't it?
The kitchen itself is stunning. The scrapes are on the inside only, but I really don't want to see that every time I open a cupboard. Also - it does happen that you can inadvertently close a cupboard on an item which isn't fully pushed in - I don't want to be worrying every time I put something away.
I would be very happy to recommend them if they get this sorted out but I can't name them publicly right now.
I know from watching the telly that things need to be primed before they are painted, i wonder whether this could be the issue? Who knows?

I have high gloss doors and they are very hard wearing, however the insides are laminated rather than painted so no problems with scratching.
One thing that did happen with my sisters high gloss doors was she started to notice small scratches and staining on the front of the doors about a year after the kitchen was fitted. We took a close look at them and realised the fitters had left the protective plastic wrap on them. Thirty minutes later, after removing the film from every door and drawer, she had a brand new kitchen again. It was a standing joke in the family and when my kitchen was fitted I noticed the doors had a blue film on them to avoid the mistake. Three years later I started seeing scratches on the drawers…. Yet again the protective film was still in place. I’d assumed all the fronts had blue film so didn’t bother checking the drawers.

Saz12 · 28/12/2021 13:46

I’d contact them when they’re open.
Clearly the cupboards are not fit for purpose, nor if acceptable quality for the intended use.

Florence1960 · 28/12/2021 13:54

I've left the plastic on some of mine! Just to keep it nice for a while longer 🤗
Thank you for your replies and advice.
I can't contact them now but I will do so first thing in the morning. I am very hopeful that they'll get it sorted out - or I'll be getting a great big discount!

You said the doors are high gloss. It looks to me that the doors are laminated and the doors have been spray painted inside without the correct preparation beforehand. Modern paint these days is extremely hard wearing. No way should they scratch like this! I suggest you tell the fitters that the doors and cupboard interiors are not fit for purpose. What’s it all going to look like in a couple of years?

magicstar1 · 28/12/2021 14:08

I’ve had Ikea high gloss for 5 years now, and no scratches on the inside. Some of the doors get white marks on the inside where the drawers pull out, but that wipes off. Yours should be more hard wearing than they are.

Florence1960 · 28/12/2021 14:18

Thanks, the doors are high gloss and the inside are painted the same colours but matte. The doors in the utility room (where the large scratch is) had to be sent away for repainting but they didn't say what the problem was. I'm just feeling so sad but I hope they'll sort it out. As I said, I've paid everything bar £5,000 so I'm sore they'll get it sorted. I will just have to try to put it out of my mind for now, there's nothing to be done about it today. I do appreciate everyone's comments and advice, thank you.
