Builders on Bank Holiday

Herecomethedaffodils · 28/12/2021 08:27

AIBU to be pissed off at house across the road/their builders who rocked up at 7.20 this morning (Tuesday 28th) and have been shouting and banging and hammering and chucking stuff about ever since. Is it not a Bank Holiday and is 7.20 not too bloody early on any day!? Go away

Bedsheets4knickers · 28/12/2021 08:37

It's only a bank holiday to some . For many its just another working day I'm afraid .

Shiningpath · 28/12/2021 08:40

It’s an observed bank holiday across the UK so if your area has noise restrictions for a bank holiday they should be observed.

SundayTeatime · 28/12/2021 08:41

Noisy construction work is not permitted on bank holidays.

hellswelshy · 28/12/2021 08:42

Yanbu. 7.20 too early! And I say that as a person who has workmen here today (and yesterday!) finishing off a job that was delayed pre Christmas due to Covid. It's rubbish but got to be done, sigh.

CasperGutman · 28/12/2021 08:43

It's frustrating to have your lie-in disrupted, but they're no obliged to take the day off.

Most councils seem to consider 07:30 an acceptable time to start noisy work, so 07:20 is a little too early, I suppose?

They're unreasonable to make more noise than necessary at any time, though.

Bushkin · 28/12/2021 08:46

It’s a proper bank holiday - why do you say only for some @Bedsheets4knickers?

Herecomethedaffodils · 28/12/2021 08:46

Too be honest it's not the fact they're working, it's the 7.20 start and the fact that they're ripping tiles off a roof and chucking them into the skip below. The noise!!! Feel so sorry for the other neighbours who work full time and for whom these couple of days should be restful and involve a lazy lie in. And also, shut up shouting on top of the noise you're already making. 😩

Because it's not for employees at supermarkets. They switch them . Trust me I know this I've just finished a night shift .
SundayTeatime · 28/12/2021 08:51

They are not allowed to do that. There are laws. The fine is up to £20,000. I can’t believe the people on this thread saying it is OK. Builders can work, but they can’t do noisy work. Eg, they can’t use hand or power tools, put up plasterboard, put up or dismantle scaffolding, that sort of thing.

ZoBo123 · 28/12/2021 08:54

People who work in retail work many bank holidays. Today is Boxing Day bank holiday as It fell on a Sunday. Like yesterday was Christmas Day bank holiday as it fell on a Saturday. The New Years Day bank holiday will also be next Monday as it is on Saturday. They should be observing bank holiday restrictions today, which are usually the same as sundays.

SundayTeatime · 28/12/2021 08:59

And the start point for noise is 8am, not 7:30, but that only applies Monday to Friday. There can be no noise on bank holidays or Sundays. My neighbour is having a massive extension done, and their builders did work yesterday, but they weren’t making any noise, so it was fine. Perhaps they were doing the electrics or painting. That’s fine.

Shiningpath · 28/12/2021 09:07

@Bedsheets4knickers just because you’re working on a bank holiday doesn’t mean it’s Nita bank holiday. Hmm

Eh? It's a bank holiday for everyone. That's the point of them - they're national holidays.

Just because some people have to work as normal, doesn't negate that fact! I spent years in retail working bank holidays but they were still bank holidays!

Exactly this. I have zero objection to whatever people do quietly in their own homes at whatever time and on whatever day of the week they (or the contractors) choose. I'm not an unreasonable person, I get that people have to work. But I don't like unreasonable and inconsiderate people, they're nothing more than selfish. I think I will contact the contractor who has (foolishly!!!) put up a board advertising the company, and remind them about the fines that are in place for this kind of breach. Thanks for your responses and for helping me to see that despite a crap night's sleep (thanks menopause!!!) that I'm not just being a grumpy tired old mare and that this is indeed unreasonable.

I feel your pain, OP, and YANBU. However I think the coronavirus working rules are still in place, which may mean that they're technically allowed to work with fewer restrictions - maybe worth checking, or they'll just send back a smug non-answer...?

Oh thanks, I'll have a look at that first so I don't make a fool total tit of myself first!! Would also love to know about the health and safety implications of starting work on a roof in the dark when it's trying to snow. Bloody idiots Confused

Sounds like this could have been an emergency repair for a leak.

No. They're having a huge extension, ground floor and first floor. Scaffolding went up before Christmas. Definitely not an emergency.

Good luck with building an extension in this weather.

Not aware of any councils that allow working on Bank Holidays even during covid. Worth checking but it's also your neighbours being selfish for allowing the work to happen. Are they even home?

Jjjayfee · 28/12/2021 10:02

Go and speak to the builders. Most are reasonable people who will keep the noise down when they can. It is easy for people to forget how their noise bothers others.

twominutesmore · 28/12/2021 10:16

The relaxation of working hours for the building industry during covid did not allow for noisy works on Sundays or Bank Holidays. They shouldn't be making a noise on a Bank Holiday and certainly not at 7:20am. The issue is whether removing roof tiles constitutes 'noisy works'. I realise they were shouting and throwing tiles into a skip but suspect it may not in itself be 'noisy work' like hammering or drilling or cement mixing would be, and hard to prove afterwards.

I've got some sympathy with the homeowner who may have waited longer than usual for the work and will of course just say 'yes please' to any dates the builder gives them. But the builder should certainly know better.

I doubt a complaint will get anywhere but I would raise it with them directly in the hope they're more considerate in future, and complain to the council if it persists, if only to cause some inconvenience for them.

All councils allow work on bank holidays. What isn’t allowed is noisy work.
sst1234 · 28/12/2021 10:41

Who told you it’s a bank holiday? It’s not.

Yes, it is. Today is the Boxing Day bank holiday. Yesterday was Christmas Day bank holiday.
