Perforated ear drum

Posting for traffic sorry!

Wondering if anyone's had this and could help shed some light?

My son is 10 months old and has a perforated ear drum from a really horrid virus he caught a few weeks ago sad

He was seen by the GP a week ago who diagnosed it. They said it was full of discharge but didn't look infected at the moment.

However it is still leaking loads of fluid quite regularly. It is pus/cloudy fluid that comes out and it's quite a lot.

They told me it could take around 2-3 weeks to heal completely but I'm wondering how long it should be leaking like this for?

It seems like such a lot to still be coming out, when it comes it drips/runs down the side of his face it's so much sad he keeps tugging on it and seems so uncomfortable until the fluid comes out as well.

If it seems to be making him uncomfortable I would ring 111 and get him seen again. You don't mention if he has had antibiotics already but he may need some (more).

DS (4) has a perforated ear drum. When it gets infected it can easily leak for a week or two. It mostly doesn't bother him but he always needs antibiotics to clear it up.

My daughter had this (a couple times 😒). Her ENT always gave her antibiotics. Hers only ever drained like that when it first "exploded," after that it was just a little drainage.

No when they saw him they said at the moment it didn't need antibiotics because it wasn't actually infected but they agreed it was filled with discharge although they said it was from the virus he had rather than his ear (but that was a week ago)

He has another appointment with them in 2 weeks to check it's healed but didn't want to leave it that long if the leaking is abnormal. I'll ring 111 I think, thank you!

DDgets this and our GP says if it drains for longer than 5 days get antibiotics? Sympathies, it’s miserable!

Oh thank you that's really helpful. I should have asked when there but I always forget something!

Cranial Chiro specialising in paediatrics worked wonders for my DS, he suffered with perforated ears at a similar age, after treatment he never had any more issues, treatment was on going though whilst he was little, worth it not to see him in pain.

When my DS had this the GP gave him antibiotics straight away as a precaution because he said he couldn't get a clear view of the inner ear so might be worth a trip back if it doesn't improve.

You have my sympathy. I was exhausted after dealing with it Flowers

@Earrrrr I only asked about the third time she got it! Tbh now I call our gp if she has a cold and says her hearing is going and ask them for a prescription just in case- it inevitably peaks in the middle of the night after she’s been lying down.
