To be grumpy about waiting to be discharged

Singlebutmarried · 27/12/2021 12:03

Been in hospital since Xmas eve.

I’ve been told I can go today, but once the drs have seen me.

Rounds are usually at 10ish, no one’s come around yet.

I just want to get home now.

Waiting for discharge is frustrating and boring but the doctors will get to you as soon as they can.

It’s boring and I understand how you feel, but they’ll get to you as soon as they can.

You can go home whenever you want. It’s not a prison. You can literally just leave. It’s not always best to do that, because it’s useful to ensure you have everything you need for discharge (paperwork, medications, follow-ups, discharge instructions, sick line for work etc) but you don’t have to stay if you don’t want to.

It always, frustratingly, takes hours to be discharged. Even after ward round you could wait hours for the paperwork to be signed or 6 hours for discharge meds from pharmacy, and that’s on a normal day not a bank holiday!

I’m glad you are well enough to leave, it must have been awful to be in over Christmas, I hope you get out soon and get home to your comfy bed ASAP Flowers

It is frustrating. Obviously they can’t help it and there’s higher priority people to deal with, but it’s annoying when all you need is a nod from a doctor who doesn’t have a spare minute. I did walk out once when I was told I’d be discharged at 1pm after the doctor had seen me and I still waiting gone midnight. I just booked in with my gp the next day for a check up, I know it’s not that easy to do nowadays

I had this after giving birth to my daughter. They kept me in for a few days after due to blood pressure and on the day I was due for discharge, I had to chase it up for hours. Then when I was discharged, I needed to wait another hour for meds.

It was insane to me as I was in a side room which could have been turned around for someone else. This was coming from a place knowing how important these are as I really needed it and was grateful for it (my daughter was in NICU and there is nothing worse (to me at that time) than being in a bay surrounded by mums with their healthy babies).

Didn't help that the midwives rolled their eyes at this doctor as he was often not found when needed (and not necessarily because he was doing something important).
