To ask if you have ever gone abroad for Xmas and if so what was it like?

Just had another mediocre grey rainy Xmas day spent cooking with difficult family members in attendance.

We have been taking for years about me DH and dcs going somewhere either snowy and Xmassy or hot and sunny on Xmas day. Covid permitting, I think 2022 might be the year we do it.

Has anyone done this and can you share your experiences?

I've spent a few in Australia with family....absolutely loved them....bbq and pool for Xmas day.....beach on boxing day

We used to go to Barbados every Xmas. Loved it. Father Christmas coming in on a jet ski on Xmas morning. Exchanging gifts and then going for a swim.

Sadly DH is a Xmas at home sort of man. I would love to do it like this one day again.

I’ve wondered this too. I think next few years are going to be unpredictable with covid and I think this unpredictability at Christmas time would be unbearable for me. But I’m really interested in the idea of some winter sun.

Thailand one year and it was wonderful.

Walking out of the sea onto a beach after a night dive on Christmas Eve and hearing lovely music and seeing fairy lights everywhere and bits of cotton wool ‘snow’ on some of the trees. That was the only remotely Christmassy experience there and I was delighted not to be offered turkey anywhere.

Give me tapas over turkey every Xmas day and I'd be happy.

Thanks so much everyone. So glad to hear that most of you have had a great experience going away. Been searching Swiss chalets on Airbnb! Think we are definitely going to do it.

I've flown to the US on Christmas Day before...to New York, Denver and Chicago and it was snowy each time. As a PP commented, Boxing Day is not a thing, so it was straight into everything. I also went to Australia one year to visit family: lots of pool parties, barbies on the beach and surfing Santas. 🎅 That was a brilliant experience.

If you are off to Switzerland, OP, have a look at some of the train/boat/bus passes. I seem to remember reading that they have had a lot of early snow this year (but that doesn't stop pubic transport):

We flew to Spain one Boxing Day. Stayed in a hotel. Had a big celebration meal on New Years Eve. It was fabulous.

My parents are dead, I'd go abroad every year if if wasn't for DH wanting to understandably see his parents. We've gone straight after Xmas to Iceland, Seville, Copenhagen etc and I've enjoyed that much more than the day itself. Even wihen the DC were younger.
It's definitely on the agenda.

Spent Christmas in a small village in the South of France a few years back. Everything seemed a lot more low key and family oriented. Bar a tree in the main square you would not know it was Christmas. You are not assaulted by a barrage of tinsel and Noddy Holder everytime you walk into a shop. It was great to just be away from all the consumerist shite. Went for a lovely forest walk in the morning, had a lovely late lunch with some me excellent local wines.
