To think clothes shop websites do not photograph their clothes well?

Is it just me? Looking at clothes in the sales, but I don't think it is just in the sales they do this. How are you meant to tell what the clothes look like with photos like this?? (attached)So many sites like this, I just don't get it. Showed my daughter a photo earlier of a tshirt top, model in pic wearing TWO shirts on top of tshirt and has arms crossed in front of her-how are you meant to tell what the actual tshirt looks like?
Anyone work in this field who can explain why companies do this?

To clarify my problem with the above photo is it is supposed to be a product photo of the trousers, model standing in way that covers part of them with bag over another section of them and photo doesn't show the full item!

I always assume they photograph them like that because they're hideous and wouldn't sell otherwise Grin

DeeCeeCherry · 26/12/2021 19:42

God knows. I suspect they think it looks trendy. I cant stand fast fashion anyway, but I come across sites from time to time and the model poses are. laughable. They either look as if theyre contorting themselves, or are in an extreme wide- legged stance that surely to God they must know is so unflattering.

You just can't get a sense of how the actual clothes would
look on. The photo you attached is a clear example of no clue how to display clothing well.

Or maybe its the photographers who have no style but think theyre being edgy

maffhew · 26/12/2021 19:42

Yes! I've noticed this more and more recently. One I saw recently with a photo of the models face, erm thanks but can we see what she's wearing?
Also there's a thread on here with a lady coveting a white coat. Two of the pics show the model on her phone and you can just see the sleeve of the coat.
Glad it's not just me!

pigsDOfly · 26/12/2021 19:47

Absolutely, you really can't see what that outfit looks like.

I'm a woman of a certain age and tend to buy my jeans online from M&S.

With them, it's not so much that you can't see the clothes it's more that they seem to be on a mission to make them look as ugly as possible.

More often than not the models are standing in a way that makes them look tired or ill or just plain fed up.

And they seem to find the biggest, ugliest shoes they can for the models to wear, which really doesn't to the trousers any favours.

With so many people buying clothes online now they really need to understand most people are looking for cute photos or edgy looking models.

We just want them to stand upright and show the clothes clearly and, in the case of M&S less ugly.

NameChangeinHaste · 26/12/2021 19:49

I always think it’s one thing Boden does really well. They photograph curated outfits, in relatively real life situations, so I know what the actual clothes look like on - or at least what they would look like on if I was a willowy 6ft model!
I can’t bear all the miserable, slouchy models, photographed against a plain white background, it makes it really hard for me to visualise the clothes.

pigsDOfly · 26/12/2021 19:49

*Should be 'most people aren't look for cute photos and edgy looking models'

purpledagger · 26/12/2021 19:52

I agree.

I don't mind a couple of curated photos, but I also need to see what the item looks like on a model by itself.

MeltedWax · 26/12/2021 19:53

Just been looking at the Zara sale and most of the photos are blurry Xmas Confused What's the point??

flippityflip · 26/12/2021 19:56

@pigsDOfly " it's not so much that you can't see the clothes it's more that they seem to be on a mission to make them look as ugly as possible.

More often than not the models are standing in a way that makes them look tired or ill or just plain fed up. "

THIS exactly this, if I can actually see the item in pictures this us the other problem!!

We also need to know the length of the garment, including the sleeve length. This is something that Boden do really well. All clothing companies should be giving us this level of detail about the measurements of each size, otherwise they can quite frankly stop moaning about how many returns they get.

Dixiechickonhols · 26/12/2021 20:01

I agree. I follow some over 40 fashion ladies on Instagram and sometimes post my outfits as it’s good to see things worn by normal person. I’ve bought things I wouldn’t have looked twice at on company website as a result.

WhatIsThisPlease · 26/12/2021 20:02

I agree!!!!!

Why do they tuck tops in or fold them under so your can't see how bloody long they are?? Drives me mad.

JovialNickname · 26/12/2021 20:03

Tops tucked in are the worst. I want a long top that covers my bum, how on earth am I supposed to pick one when they're all shown tucked into high waisted jeans?

JovialNickname · 26/12/2021 20:05

Great minds @WhatIsThisPlease

Antsgomarching · 26/12/2021 20:05

Yup, keep seeing folded arms, models scrunched into balls,. Just stand still facing the camera with entire outfit on show. It’s ridiculous, I’m not rating how arty the photo is I’m trying to buy a bloody jumper.

WhatIsThisPlease · 26/12/2021 20:09

@JovialNickname indeed!!!

Xtraincome · 27/12/2021 22:24

-Tops tucked in
-Accessories covering clothes
-Unnatural poses
-photographed from weird angle
-1 image of Size 8 and very tall model for a dress where it looks like it's loose fitting , then 1 image of Size 18/20 model wearing same dress badly as it now looks like a bodycon so you can't tell what the dress will look like on you, the person between those sizes and shapes. I would appreciate you just showing it me on a hanger as well.

Before I get flamed, this is nothing to do with size but how they choose to hang clothes on models and then pick the images they do as the best look for marketing!?

Boohoo are good at showing various sizes and many are a size 12 so not too bad but I guess it depends what you're looking at.
